They establish that Shawn along with Corpanga was one of the original schemers in Boy Meets World - and yet he seemed to have NO IDEA that they were setting him up to meet Maya's mom. Their plan was so transparent and it was the one time I actually felt Rider Strong pull out of character & just recite lines, cause that whole interaction at the window between the three didn't feel like Shawn at all to me. If that was a Boy episode, he would've known right away he was being set up for something. I'll a...Hate that you can't edit comments!

I'll add as a final point, that in my mind the reason they had Shawn intervening at all was to simply show that this guy, who had been running away from all commitments and deep relationships for years, cares enough to do this. It doesn't matter that he didn't *have* to. The point is that he *wanted* to. I think that serves its purpose as well. First of all, Shawn's a character in his own right. The purpose he serves doesn't necessarily have to be solely in advancing Maya's story. He's also... his own character we care about. And we learned more about him, including where his head's at with regards to Maya (and Angela, for that matter) and he met Katy, and there's a budding attraction between them. That, in and of itself, is a purpose. Riley and Maya are the main characters, but that doesn't mean recurring characters like Shawn can't have moments that exist more for them than the girls.

And I think to whittle the entire episode down to "Shawn didn't HAVE to intervene so the episode's bad." is kind of silly. A lot happened in the episode. Shawn's intervention on Maya's behalf wasn't even what the episode was about, it was about Riley's plot to get Shawn and Katy together when she notices how close Shawn and Maya are getting. Christianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15777511078966279437noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-382001792347152845.post-52906870752302266312015-04-30T23:05:15.516-07:002015-04-30T23:05:15.516-07:00Riley Riley Riley. What is Riley's narrative? ...Riley Riley Riley. What is Riley's narrative? A narrative needs conflict, and I cannot for the life of me tell you what Riley's conflicts and struggles are. She's not bullied, she has great friends, a great home life, she's smart and good looking, and now she's dating the best looking guy in school. She never really even gets in trouble. What part of that am I supposed to be invested in? I'm not saying she's a bad character by any means, just... neutral. She engages in dialogue and moves the story to its resolution. Maybe there are some self esteem issues once in a while, but they're always quickly resolved by the greatest support system on earth, consisting of her parents+Maya+a billionaire. What am I supposed to look forward to with Riley? She doesn't have a story. Hell, she doesn't even have hobbies.

You just described pretty much every Disney Channel show.Rayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11674596339371994623noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-382001792347152845.post-4578334387678387852015-04-30T22:22:04.016-07:002015-04-30T22:22:04.016-07:00I legitimately don't understand what people lo...I legitimately don't understand what people love about Girl Meets Master Plan. The entire plot falls apart once you realize that Shawn serves no purpose.

He didn't need to "get Maya and her mother together" because Katy didn't ACTUALLY forget Maya's birthday. Am I supposed to believe that Katy wouldn't at any point have explained the situation about working the double shift at the diner to Maya? No, because then Maya wouldn't have gotten the locket. The act of giving it to her in itself would've proven that she didn't forget.

The only purpose Shawn serves is to tell Maya that her dad was the one who left Katy - information he just happened upon and chose to say, intruding on something that's really none of his business. Oh, that, and to hold up a neon sign that reads "ME AND KATY HART ARE GOING TO MAKE POOKIE POOK".

Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09707786666476725727noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-382001792347152845.post-42160379311020339762015-04-30T16:45:50.757-07:002015-04-30T16:45:50.757-07:00I love the GOT reference. Nicely done.
I won'...I love the GOT reference. Nicely done.

I won't bring up Lucas again, simply because my defense hasn't changed, and it would be pointless to go through it again. If he fails as miserably as he has in Season 1, then I'll be right there with you. He'll have to go.

Farkle isn't nearly as bad as Lucas, but they absolutely have to cut the "stalker" crap with him. Find him something else. Anything else. Just cut the "I love Maya and Riley" shit. Its not realistic, or becoming of somebody who's supposed to be only 13-14 years old. Just stop!

I...never thought about the character of Riley as having life "too" easy. Yet, now that you mention it, you are absolutely right. However, my counter would be is that she is being raised by parents who came of age in the 90s, and ideas about punishment of your kids have changed drastically in those 20 years. So, that could explain her lack of consequences in the episode you mentioned. I have no response however to the fact we don't really know anything about her. She's nearly as one dimensional as Lucas. That's not Rowan's fault, that falls squarely on Jacobs and the writing team.

Favorite episode: Girl Meets Master Plan. So we know that Cory likes baseball a lot, and that lasts the whole season. I can't name ONE THING that Riley likes besides Lucas. It also sets up the conflict between Feeny and Cory, which lasts for the whole series. It's not always a conflict, of course, but he is a consistent source of stress. I would definitely argue that Feeny was the biggest problem Cory faced in season 1, and there's nothing like that for Riley. (There is for Maya, though, and that's why she's great.)

Throughout the first season, Cory gets detention, sleeps through and fails a test, cheats on another test, tries to watch an R rated movie, he has a lot of interesting experiences. And that's why I liked Girl Meets The Forgotten, because Riley actually learned from her own mistakes and experiences. But most of the other episodes are missing that, ESPECIALLY Girl Meets Demolition.

Seanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04773515281303659184noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-382001792347152845.post-57929744510107979962015-04-28T18:37:28.188-07:002015-04-28T18:37:28.188-07:00"But like you said, that horse has been beate..."But like you said, that horse has been beaten to death. I guess I just needed to beat it one more time to make sure Lucas doesn't fucking take Riley and ride off on it."
And that is when I almost spit my drink onto my computer screen. Too funny!

"Runner-up for worst character for me, though, is Farkle. As the only other teen guy, he comes off well by comparison to Lucas, but he's no great shakes either. They've struggled to pin down exactly his personality, and way too often veer into the larvae stage of a sexual predator which I'm not enjoying in the slightest." I forgot about that, but yes, you are absolutely right! The way he lusts after Riley and Maya is disturbing and I hate that he never gets called out on it. I do love the actor, but that side of the character is just wrong.

"A narrative needs conflict, and I cannot for the life of me tell you what Riley's conflicts and struggles are. She's not bullied, she has great friends, a great home life, she's smart and good looking, and now she's dating the best looking guy in school. She never really even gets in trouble. What part of that am I supposed to be invested in?"
Isn't that sort of how Cory was at first, too, though? He had Harley and Griff as the bullies, but they weren't around in every episode. In the first few seasons, Cory was as you describe Riley above. The interesting stuff came later -- his self-esteem issues, his need to compare his relationships with the ones others have (Shawn and his girlfriends, Eric and his dad, etc.). In Season 1, the biggest problem Cory faced was, like, losing his dad's boxing gloves. I'm not saying you're wrong about Riley, I'm just wondering how you see her arc this season as different from Cory's in BMW Season 1.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10990684371992699917noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-382001792347152845.post-65396166335561155232015-04-25T21:18:50.056-07:002015-04-25T21:18:50.056-07:00Off the bat, thanks for devoting your time to this...Off the bat, thanks for devoting your time to this blog. I can feel your passion for BMW/GMW through the screen.

I think Season 1 was better than even I thought it could be. Granted, when this show is bad its very hard to watch. Yet, when its good, its fantastic. It holds its own against its predecessor. The biggest surprise, and the reason I think the show is off to such a good start, is the casting of Rowan & Sabrina as Riley and Maya. This show's on-screen success starts with them and what they bring to the table as a duo, and individually. Not only have they done a great job, but I can't imagine anybody else as Riley and Maya. In my opinion, they've crushed it.

I can take or leave Farkle (Cory Fogelmanus), and I do hope they somehow give Lucas (Peyton Meyer) some depth. Another season of "Disney Prince Platitudes" and he's sunk and there is no salvaging the character.

I want to see how the Maya/Josh arc goes. As much as it may make some uncomfortable, not everybody falls for somebody in their age group. That's just life. So, I'm very interested in this, and want to see it develop. If done right and respectfully, it can make for great TV.pwfanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05846753926134120983noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-382001792347152845.post-72010366911191605612015-04-25T21:00:07.681-07:002015-04-25T21:00:07.681-07:00"Maya going to pieces over him isn't cute..."Maya going to pieces over him isn't cute."
THANK YOU. That would hav...I love your original post-BMW idea. That would have been awesome! I always wanted Shawn and Eric to move across the hall from Cory and Topanga (like a Chandler and Joey situation) so they could all have NYC adventures. Shawn would go off to find himself (or to find Angela, but my 2000 self and my 2015 self now disagree on that) and Eric, who worked as a social worker or for a children's charity or something, would adopt out of the foster system, and on the day he's supposed to bring his kids home, he meets The One (whom I always cast as Melissa Joan Hart in my head because I loved her chemistry with Will in that Disney World special and in Witches of Pennbrook), so he'd have to deal with being a single dad and actually have a good love interest for once. I really connected with Eric during the Tommy storyline and although I know he wasn't ready to be a father when Tommy came into his life, I always knew he'd be a great dad. I can't wait for Uncle Eric scenes with Auggie!

Overall I liked this season. It had its share of missteps (which I don't know if I can blame on it being a Disney Channel show--I think the writers are just lazy sometimes), but for a freshman sitcom it's doing pretty well finding its rhythm. It's wonderful to have Cory and Topanga back on my TV, and Rowan and Sabrina have been a pleasant surprise. Riley is the perfect C/T daughter -- she has the right amount of sweetness, charm, and Cory's naivete. And every moment with Shawn has been pure win! I'll even forgive him not being in Riley's life for a long time, because that's perfectly in character.

Josh is great, but they need to drop the Josh/Maya thing. I think it would be OK if they bantered and had a sort of flirty friendship, but it just seems too weird/icky to go beyond that. Maya going to pieces over him isn't cute.

Cory Fogelmanus has been another pleasant surprise. After the pilot, I couldn't imagine being subjected to Farkle every week, but I quickly changed my mind. There's something special about that kid. I want him to stick around way longer than Minkus did on BMW. Lucas can go back to Texas, but Farkle is fantastic.

Thanks for starting this blog and sharing with us, Christian! I've looked forward to your updates after each episode and I like this new format with Sean chiming in. Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10990684371992699917noreply@blogger.com
