JUST MISSED THE LIST: Heartbreak Cory, Bee True, Prom-ises Prom-ises
OTHER HONORABLE MENTIONS: Uncle Daddy, Hair Today... Goon Tomorrow, Turkey Day, Ain't Gonna Spray Lettuce No More, We'll Have a Good Time Then, The Eskimo, Father Knows Less, Things Change, Graduation, Stormy Weather, Wheels, An Affair to Forget
1. Security Guy. I don't expect anyone to challenge this.
2. The Eskimo
3. An Affair to Forget
4. City Slackers
5. Eric Hollywood
6. Raging Cory
7. Brother Brother
8. And Then There Was Shawn
9. Brotherly Shove
10. B & B's B n B
I AGREE WITH CHRISTIAN: Shallow Boy, Heartbreak Cory, Torn Between, Bee True, Uncle Daddy, Turkey Day, Aint Gonna Spray, Chet's Curtain Call, Father Knows Less, Things Change, Stormy Weather, Learning to Fly (and Hair Today just for Good Looking Guy)
CHRISTIAN IS OUT OF HIS MIND: Prom-ises Prom-ises, Wheels
CHRISTIAN IS MISSING OUT: Turnaround, Pop Quiz, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, Janitor Dad, Chick Like Me
I'm going to kick off the debate portion of this post by talking about Affair to Forget. I'm just going to copy from BMWR's epilogue: This is the paragon showing of the Cory/Shawn bromance and every second of it is magic. It is abundantly clear that they love each other in a way we never see between Cory and Topanga. But that doesn't stop Topanga from helping Shawn (and the audience) understand that a girlfriend shouldn't keep you from your friends (a life lesson, you might say). What really sets this one apart from future bromance episodes is that Shawn isn't competing with Topanga. In the future, once Cory and Topanga have been soulmated™, it's presented as Shawn vs. Topanga, and littered with Topanga making frustrated faces to the sound of audience laughter. But in this episode it's not a competition. Topanga just wants to help. Meanwhile, Eric is putting on his one man show. He believes in himself, he dreams, and he tries. He fails, ultimately, but Feeny is there to help him pick up the pieces and he offers Eric some genuine, meaningful advice. This episode has everything.
It is absolutely a top ten episode. The other differences can be chalked up to taste, but on this one, WAY more than any other, I think you're wrong.
I mean, it's a tricky one to make a compelling debate because... I like An Affair to Forget. It's in my Honorable Mentions, it's a really good episode, and very funny. I like the Cory/Shawn stuff, I like the Eric stuff, so it's hard to debate passionately because we're debating between "I think it's the third best episode" and "I think it's a really good episode, I just don't know about top 10."
So, if we can bear in mind that I do like this episode quite a bit I guess I will attempt to explain why I don't like it quite as much as you. For starters, while this kind of begins the vaguely romantic aspect of the Cory/Shawn relationship, Cory and Shawn is like... already kind of set in stone by this point. Episodes that are about Cory and Shawn specifically as a unit aren't ones I think of as critical because it kind of feels like almost every episode is about that. Frankly, I probably didn't find it all that believable that Shawn would have even agreed to ditch Cory in the first place, although it wasn't a problem. That always seemed a little odd to me. Plus, the ending was a little inevitable as well.
As for Eric, it's a fun little storyline, but in this era of the series, you don't have to throw a stone very far to hit a Feeny/Eric mentor/mentree moment and there's better examples than this one. So, I don't know. Just think the other episodes were better! No offense meant to Affair to Forget.
You know what's a better episode that you didn't include in your top 10? Torn Between Two Lovers (Feeling Like a Fool.) It features really good acting on Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel's parts, the lovely Lauren, Shawn used in a very good capacity, and if that wasn't enough, it's got Eric's citizenship teacher storyline. It's like "Oh, here's a really powerful episode about a dramatic story arc we're starting, and oh just for fun here's one of the best Feeny/Eric storylines of the entire series just for funzies as well." Great great episode. You cited it as an episode you'd like, but that's Top 10 material, sir.
And, whoa, where's "You Can Go Home Again" on your list of episodes you like? You don't say you agree or that you disagree about it. An oversight? It's a perfect encapsulation of Eric's journey to live up to his potential, a great episode for him in general, it features a really heartwarming little mini-romance between him and the diner girl, it's got lots of humor ("I'll be in that farm house... there...") and sets the stage for Alan's Season 4 story arc. I'm a sucker for the father/son (and surrogate father/son) relationships on this show, and Alan and Eric is my favorite one of all. Great episode for them. You should include this episode.
And jeez, what's your beef with Prom-ises, Prom-ises? Maybe my friend Mr. Washington can change your mind? How about a mystery bag? Maybe it's good? Maybe it's not? No, but seriously, I find it a very funny episode, I really like how Eric and Jack are used, and I also like the show having a frank and mature look at sex. For the only time in the series.
Also, I'M out of my mind for having it as an honorable mention? When you've got Pop "Everyone Who Reads Our Blog Will Have To Google This Episode To Remember What The Plot Was" Quiz? Pshaw.
I feel like you and I have debated Wheels before. I like it a lot, it's one of the few instances where Alan/Cory is given the depth of Alan/Eric, I really like it. The fights felt like fights I've had with my dad. AND it's still really funny. Nothing to pshaw HERE.
Other than "Pop Quiz" which I don't think is in the upper 50th percentile of the series, I got no beef with your "missing out" episodes, but, nah, they just don't make my top 20. I like her, but I've never been as wound up about Dana as you and since that relationship ultimately didn't go anywhere it kinda feels like a let down in retrospect. I actually think "I Love You, Donna Karan" is better (JUST "I Love You, Donna Karan", Sean. Not "Chasing Angela" too. Just "I Love You, Donna Karan.")
A similar thing applies with "Janitor Dad" because the first thing that always comes to my mind is "Huh, and then we never see Chet as the janitor again." Also I always roll my eyes at how pointlessly hostile random-ass Crandall is for no reason. Remember that guy? What was that guy's problem!?
"Chick Like Me" I like. Just has always felt like I didn't like it as much as everyone else did. It's good. I'm just not wound up about it. I mean, I'd give it like a B+, it's good.
I'm actually pleasantly surprised you have Raging Cory on your list. I didn't think you would. You for sure should.
Of course I have Raging Cory. I'm not a father smiter.
You Can Go Home Again should have been under "AGREE", but I'll leave it out to preserve the writing. It's great, but there's a gigantic hole that keeps me from putting it in top 10. The whole reason Cory and Eric go on the trip is to reconnect as brothers. That's where Brother Brother ended. But there isn't one single mention of their rekindled brotherhood in YCGHA. Not once. In fact, the opening scene tells us that Cory's been thinking way more about Topanga than Eric for the entire trip. That was a massive disappointment for me.
I'm looking at Prom-ises the way you look at Pop Quiz. Mystery Bag is outrageously funny, but I can't think of anything else that would make me watch that episode in my free time.
I respect your opinion on Janitor Dad and Chick Like Me.
I like Torn Between Two Lovers. I'd love to have Lauren in my top 10. Amy, Alan, and Shawn all saying "I like her" is fantastically compelling. But I hate the ending too much for it to be top 10, despite Ben's perfect delivery there at Chubbie's.
Wheels doesn't do anything for me. I'm curious what other people have to say about that one. I'm totally receptive to being the minority on that episode.
On the other hand, you are almost certainly in the minority on City Slackers. I bet you think a moose can be a ranger.
I think if I was grading City Slackers, I'd give it a B. It's a good episode. William Daniels gets MVP. Actually that gives me an idea....

That would have been more fun if they weren't all A-plusses. But they are. I tried to make some A's for variety. But they're A-plusses. Also, I'm such a fucking Eric fanboy. Look at that shit.
Anyway, when you come down to it, I say City Slackers is a mediocre episode with a few admittedly great moments but those moments are ultimately only a total of like 5 minutes of the episode. Most of it is just unremarkable Cory and Shawn shenanigans, and a very boring B-plot about all the supporting characters playing pool. Nothing about the rest of it is above 'okay.' I agree those moments are enough to deem it a good episode, not just an okay one. But top 10? Fourth ever? Nah, not for me.
You know what's so good about the Mystery Bag joke, while we're on it? It's not just that Eric carries around a mystery bag for no discernible reason just in case. Thats great in and of itself, but that's just surface level gold. The real gem is how enticed it makes the desk clerk. The brief look on his face as he contemplates what secrets that bag might hold killllls me. Anyway.
I don't hate "Two Lovers"'s ending. It's really compelling. I mean, Topanga's crazy, but whatever, we're on Cory's side, and Cory's reaction is perfect. And Danielle does a pretty good job selling it, for how dumb it is. But like, it's not dumb in a "This is just dumb writing." way. It's actually something I could see a high school girl doing. This whole storyline was good, in my opinion, because it felt very high school. Relatively low stakes, but played as if the world is on the line and yet with enough moments like "And Then There Was Shawn" that poked fun at it and them. I think I used to be a detractor on the breakup storyline, but I think it's good. It's just that "Starry Night" sucks.
I dunno, I'm done for now.
You are quite the fanboy indeed.
I give my top 3 the mythical letter that comes before A. I think they're in a class above the other 7, but yeah, 4 through 10 are all A+. I should note that my original review of B&B doesn't reflect that, it was far less passionate, but things change.
You don't need to tell me about the Mystery Bag.
Well, I think this is ready to post. Any final comments? I don't think I've got anything left to say.
I'm good.
Wow, your top 10s.
ReplyDeleteI have honestly no idea.
Security Guy is easily the best episode of the series.
Uncle Daddy's great too...damn. Season 4 was amazing.
I gotta say, no one ever cites "Security Guy" as their favorite episode elsewhere. I remember when I came to the decision it was my favorite episode, being surprised because it's not one I ever heard mentioned on blogs or message boards or anything. So it's nice that it meets with such unanimous approval, even from Sean, since this isn't a Shawn episode at all (although he's certainly funny in it)
DeleteI don't think I had ever spoken to a human being about Boy Meets World before I started the blog. I just assumed everyone knew how amazing Eric's story was, but you've said a lot of things today, Christian, that indicate an ignorant audience.
DeleteWow, really? It comes up in conversation a lot around these parts. There's a wealth of casual fans. Now, the vast majority of those casual fans do know who Eric is and like him a lot (despite my one anecdote from earlier) both for most of them they just know him as the funny wacky guy, and don't really think of him as having a story. I never hear, like, anybody but folks online cite that as being a primary reason for liking him.
DeleteI've got some beef with you boys
ReplyDeleteCome on Christian, City Slackers a "B"??? What's not to love? Cory and Shawn are at their funniest, Feeny has never seemed more human, Eric gets schooled for lying to a girl with some hilarious Joey banter, you've even got the fucking park ranger man, that dudes a legend. One of the only absolutely perfect episodes
But Sean, while I'm glad to see you come around on B&B's, you need to come around on Prom-ises, Prom-ises next. Christian is right, that episode rules. Not as hard as City Slackers but the whole hotel room switcheroo that you hate has me in tears, so great
I guess I need to give Torn Between Two Lovers another watch, I can't remember being a huge fan of Cory's story but I always skip these episodes except And Then There Was Shawn and Eric Hollywood. Maybe you guys are right that only Starry Night sucks, I quite enjoyed Heartbreak Cory the last time I saw it, way more than I remembered
I do a spot on Ranger Mark impression. I love that guy.
DeleteI meant to say this in the post, but the whole "having sex after prom" thing is so fucking 90's, it's not creative at all.
If You Can't Be With The One You Love is also pretty bad, looking at the breakup arc.
Yeah, Starry Night is the only problem with that story in my opinion. I even like the Cory/Topanga-focused portion of "If You Can't Be With The One You Love", it's just that the episode falls apart when Shawn becomes an alcoholic.... Another underrated episode is "Honesty Night", which I think gets considered a Part 2 to "Starry Night" since it's got "Night" again and is sort of the aftermath of the reunion, but "Honesty Night" is actually a lot of fun.
DeleteHeartbreak Cory is a very good episode, and it almost made the top 10 too. But I decided Torn Between Two Lovers was the stronger for a few reasons: The biggest of which is Eric's storyline being an added bonus, but also it felt like there was more at stake and it had a more compelling ending. However, I will say, "Heartbreak Cory" is Lauren's best episode specifically. I still like her in this one, but not as much as I did in "Heartbreak Cory"
B is a perfectly cromulent score, first of all. Cory and Shawn are most certainly funnier in other episodes. I don't deny Feeny's great in this episode, but it's not like you have to search high and low for examples of Feeny being great. I don't like Eric's storyline at all. And is he even lying? He turns out to have been good at pool at the end, right? That whole storyline felt pointless. And I feel like you guys care more about that Ranger than I did. What does he have, 30 seconds of screen time? He's no reception clerk from Prom-ises.
P.S. The trope of the Prom Sex thing, though, is what's being examined in Prom-ises, don't you see?! Cory assumes that's the time to have sex, regardless of if he's ready for it or she's ready for it, and he ultimately realizes he was looking at it the wrong way. Even Jack and Eric are still reeling from the trope, with their acknowledgment that neither of them even had a good prom night because all they cared about was getting laid.
DeleteAlso what's the other '90s "Sex on prom night" thing you're thinking of that's uncreative? I bet you it's American Pie! Prom-ises predates it!
I've never seen American Pie because I don't hate myself that much. It's just a very cultural thing. And I really wish they had boned. Of course they're ready. She ran away from Pittsburgh but Cory can't take her bra off? Blech
DeleteI like Honesty Night as well.
DeleteI got a question for you guys. if you were to show one episode to someone who never watched BMW before, which would it be? I'm debating between City Slackers, B & B's, B n B, and Pop Quiz. CS and BB just feel like boy meets world to me, I can't explain it. And then pop quiz is just hilarious and a fun episode.
ReplyDeleteGood question. My mother wanted to watch some episodes when I started my blog, and she enjoyed City Slackers. Christian is going to swoop in with an Eric episode, but they're not as powerful if you haven't seen the whole journey.
DeleteA close friend of mine got hooked off of Last Tango in Philly.
Affair to Forget is almost a guaranteed success. B&B is also super strong but the Eric/Feeny parts go to waste on the uninitiated. I like Pop Quiz, but Turnaround is probably better for a newcomer if you're looking at season 2.
I'm going to say "Shallow Boy" as an intro episode. It's got an equal mix of Cory/Shawn/Topanga and Eric. It's really funny which is how you want to start this off. Shows off the personalities, but doesn't ruin any arcs.
DeletePop Quiz would not be a good choice. Too much is dealing with the aftermath of someone leaving the show (Harley) which would be kind of confusing for someone brand new who has no context for who this guy was. And it sets Griff up as an important character which, ultimately, he is not. Which would probably be a shame, because Griff's cool. If I'd never seen an episode of BMW and JUST watched "Pop Quiz" my favorite character would be Griff.
DeleteI'm also going to say no on B&B's B n B and City Slackers. For one, both are more powerful episodes if you've spent some time with Feeny already, and probably with Shawn too. Also, both take place in settings we never see these characters again which I think gives a false sense of the vibe. Particularly "B&B" - does that even feature John Adams High? When so much of the episode is the trio running a bed and breakfast, and Feeny and Eric bonding in a hotel bar in Boston, and you never see any of this again, I think that's bad to start with.
DeleteShallow Boy would work for the same reasons as Affair. I think those are the best bet.
DeleteYa I agree with Shallow Boy and Affair. I get what your'e saying about B&B and City Slackers, but I think they show the shawn and cory relationship really well, and they have a good mix of heartfelt moments and funny moments which is what I think makes BMW great.
DeleteCryptid456 here, Can't log in regularly.
DeleteMan, I don't come to the blog for two days and look at what I miss.
My go-to show-a-stranger-to-the-Feenyverse episode would be Turkey Day. While not the best episode, it is one of my favorites in that it manages to get almost everything we love about the show into one episode.
We got Cory-Shawn Bromance, Funny Eric, Present Morgan, Chet Drama, Involved Feeny, Phenomenal Life Lesson from Alan, History Lesson We Can Learn From...
What's not to like?
By my non-Scientific aggregation (totaling the scores for first the ones on both lists, then the ones where the other one at least agrees it's worthy), that makes our top 10....
ReplyDelete1. Security Guy
2 and 3. Raging Cory and Eric Hollywood (tied)
4. And Then There Was Shawn
5 and 6. B&B's B 'n B and Brother Brother (tied)
7. The Eskimo
8. An Affair to Forget
9. You Can Go Home Again
10. Shallow Boy
Hi Sean. I'm another first time commenter. I've been following this blog and your BMW reviewed blog for a while now. I have to give credit for what you and Christian have built here. I thought this would be a good post to finally join in on.
ReplyDeleteMy top 10 contains a lot of the same episodes you and Christian share, but I also have some that haven't made your lists. My favorite "theme" of BMW episodes are hijinks plots. While I enjoy the Lauren plotline, it doesn't make my top 10 moments, because of how stupid both Cory and Topanga acted during its duration.
My top 10 are:
10. Hogs and Kisses
9. The Uninvited
8. And Then There Was Shawn
7. Eric Hollywood
6. It's a Wonderful Night
5. Shallow Boy
4. The Eskimo
3. An Affair to Forget
2. City Slackers/B&B's BnB
1. Security Guy
can you explain specifically what you like about Hogs and Kisses?
DeleteHogs and Kisses is a funny episode but I can't imagine it being in anyone's top ten, there's a lot of problems with it
DeleteBut I mean, UNDAHPANTS
The A story just really cracks me up. Over the top neurotic Cory usually gets on my nerves, but I think Ben Savage's humor and comedy really comes through. I also do enjoy the B story. I think the reason the food fight scene amuses me is because it reminds me of my old group of friends from university. I had a group of friends where the first time we hosted a dinner, we acted like Eric and Jack, and were trying to cover up just how sloppy we were, to our female friends. So the episode and the B story may be pretty stupid, but I can't help but laugh at it.
DeleteWow surprised so many of you could come up with a top ten. Not sure I could narrow it down in enough. I agree with most of whats been said but there is one episode I would have at least had in honorable mentions that neither of you honorably mentioned. "Wake up little cory" set the tone for a lot of the series and demonstrated the writers decision not to talk down to their audience. It was one of the most mature takes on sex in the whole show, (Promises promises included). And topanga was almost certainly at her best. It was a huge turning point for the series for sure. What's not to love in this one? Also I think i would have included life lessons but I guess that's just personal taste.
ReplyDeleteYeah when we're talking about sex episodes, I'll take Wake Up over Prom-ises every time.
DeleteYeah as much as I love Prom-ises, I think Wake Up is even better
DeleteSurprised at the lack of season 2 love in general here. Sean, no Turnaround in your top ten? I'm surprised
I adore Turnaround, but when it really comes down to it there's not much of a lesson or character development. That doesn't stop it from being a personal favorite, but objectively speaking, I have no way of arguing that it's better than anything we listed.
DeleteSeason 2's pretty weak, in my opinion. Still good, like, for a TGiF sitcom, but if the show stayed that quality I would not be the fan I am. There's a few reasons for this:
Delete1. The show's not nearly as funny at that point as it would get later on.
2. The characters and relationships aren't well defined. Cory, Eric, and Shawn often seem interchangeable in this season, it doesn't have a handle on who Topanga's supposed to be in this world at all. At this point, only the adults are being written well.
3. Even the poignant episodes aren't all that poignant. The heaviest it gets is Career Day/Home at the end, which is beneficial, because Shawn starts getting fleshed out begins to resemble the Shawn we'd come to know and love, but if you compare that to later episodes it's nothing.
I think what it comes down to is that the first two seasons (and, really, even most of Season 3) just feels like a generic high school '90s sitcom. There's not that special Boy Meets World spark, that I think only begins to present itself in Season 3 and doesn't come into full force until the perfection that is Season 4.
To be clear, there are certainly Season 2 episodes I like. Turnaround's one of them. It's just not going to come even close to the top 10. I mean, just looking at Season 4, I think every single episode that season is better than Turnaround, with the possible exceptions of Easy Street, Pittsburgh 2, and Cult Fiction. And even with those, it's just because they're dumb stories or make dumb decisions with them, the character dynamics and humor remain solid.
DeleteMe and Mr Joad feels like a generic high school sitcom? Wake Up Little Cory does? I'd say about 60% of season 2 lacks the spark, but it's still a huge departure from season 1.
DeleteI'm saying on the whole, certainly there are specific episodes and moments that rise above it. Even at it's worst BMW is still better than, like, Family Matters at its best. But still, I feel the majority of that season is Cory and Shawn getting into generic shenanigans.
Delete1, 2, 5, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, and 21 are about Cory feeling inadequate, mostly regarding his social life, while Shawn naturally and nonchalantly excels. Then the people in Cory's life help him overcome.
Delete19, 22, and 23 flip the dynamic with Shawn feeling inadequate about his home life, something that Cory naturally excels in.
7 is good without really having either of those dynamics, 18 is the first Eric/Feeny episode (I think) and it's pretty solid. 4 has a cool literature parallel.
That leaves 3, 6, 8, 13, 14, 17, and 20 as "generic shenanigans."
I've only gotten as far as episode 5 of Season 2. It augurs well that, up to that point, there only seems to have been one worth even an honourable mention.
ReplyDeleteWhich episode would that be?
DeleteFather Knows Less (referring to Sean's list, I'm far away from making one of my own).
DeleteYup, I completely agree with Milestone. The only episode from Season 1 or 2 I have on my list as an Honorable Mention is Father Knows Less. I'm sorry, guys, but the first two seasons of this show just aren't that great to me.
DeleteYes, while Season 2 so far represents a noticeable uptick from Season 1, watching the series still seems like GMW archaeology and not something I would be doing for its intrinsic merits. William Daniels apart, it’s held its greatest interest when, for example, I learn that Eric’s confusion about what country lies on your northern border wasn’t some stupidity crafted in the GMW writer’s room.
DeleteThat said, I have generally enjoyed the episodes, William Daniels is always highly watchable, and I haven’t regretted watching.
But, if I’m going to invest in a DVD box set and invest time viewing twenty-year-old TV episodes that aren’t recovering my own memory, I’m expecting more.
Everything I’ve read here tells me I’m going to get more.
I have since gone on to watch Who’s Afraid of Cory Wolf and Wake Up, Little Cory. The latter held my attention like no other episode to date. The former felt like it established a new, lower floor for the series.
Am I the only person in existence who likes "Who’s Afraid of Cory Wolf"? I mean it's dumb, sure. But it's funny. It possibly the funniest episode from season 2 for me.
DeleteYeeshk. No, I'd say that's gotta be in top 10 LEAST favorite episodes.
DeleteIN FACT, THAT GIVES ME AN IDEA......
You are the only person.
DeleteBut that's okay. Everybody gets a couple bad ones.
Sean, we're going to rank the 10 worst episodes.
DeleteDisney, I actually like "Cory Wolf" myself. Early season 2 so I don't expect anything great as they are all just beginning 7th grade, so I let a lot of stuff slide. Also I don't expect much from a holiday episode, so the laughs I got from it were fine. I love Shawn trying to take Cory's stuff that he won't need after he becomes a werewolf, its all funny and Topanga with that great weird/feminist Topanga line "I'm a damsel, but not the distressed kind"
Delete1. "Chick Like Me"
ReplyDelete2. "B & B's B 'N' B"
3. "Can I Help to Cheer You?"
4. "You Can Go Home Again"
5. "Learning to Fly"
6. "Security Guy"
7. "The Eskimo"
8. "Stormy Weather"
9. "I Ain't Gonna Spray Lettuce No More"
10. "Janitor Dad" (My own father is a janitor, so this probably means more to me than most )
Honorable Mentions : "On the Fence", "Kid Gloves", "Breaking Up Is Really, Really Hard to Do", "This Little Piggy" ,"City Slackers", "Fishing For Virna", "An Affair to Forget", "Raging Cory", "Eric Hollywood","Resurrection", "The Honeymoon is Over", "The Provider", "She's Having My Baby Back Ribs"
If anyone is still hanging around these parts, thanks for the reviews! I'm enjoying it in 2024. The Eskimo is my favorite and the one I constantly rewatch.
ReplyDelete
