Happy Birthday, Sean!

Who's a birthday boy? Who's a big birthday boy? It's Sean! He's turning.... jesus, 25? Is that really right? He's only 25. Fuck, that guy. Also, did you know he just got into DARTMOUTH for grad school? Talk about a big grown-up birthday boy!

In celebration of Sean, I was going to suggest you watch a Shawn Hunter birthday episode! But... I don't actually think there is one, is there? He's like the only character who doesn't get one.

So instead watch Cory's birthday episodes, "Kid Gloves" and "Wheels"
Topanga's birthday episode, "Sixteen Candles and Four-Hundred Pound Men."
Eric's birthday episode, "Stormy Weather"
Alan's birthday episode, "Family Trees"
Amy's birthday episode, "City Slackers" (Fittingly for our Amy, this episode has nothing to do with the fact that it's her birthday, but it actually does take place on Amy's birthday)
Maya's birthday episode, "Girl Meets Master Plan"

Did I miss any others? And yeah, yeah, I know. Characters 1-4.

It's me. I'm a big grown up birthday boy.

Do any of those listed episodes tell us about Shawn's attitude toward birthdays? I think we can all predict his edgy dismissal of celebrating, but it would be nice to know for sure.

  1. Well Riley doesn't have an actual birthday episode; but it is mentioned a couple of times. Given her birthday is in December; and we only ever got a single December episode, her birthday is pretty much swallowed by the holiday episode.

    But yes, happy birthday Sean.

  2. As it happens, I had fully intended to wish Sean a "Happy Birthday" even if this hadn't been posted--I remember from last year.

Also, congratulations on Dartmouth, man! Grad school?! You're all grown-up!

Oh, and Christian, you missed "My Baby Valentine." That was Josh's birthday (it counts, he was born).

    2. I only did MAIN CAST MEMBER birthdays, OBVIOUSLY. If I did recurring characters like Josh, where on Earth would it END?

      Delete
    3. Where would it end?

Honestly, I think it would end there actually. I can't remember any other episodes that had birthdays actively happening.

      Delete
    4. Oh wait, I just remembered. Jack Hunter's birthday is apparently sometime close to Josh's, though we don't actually see it.

Chet mentioned that "[Jack] got a birthday coming up," and had managed to frame and wrap the picture of Chet and Shawn and Jack.

But then, there's the same bit of "actively happening" birthdays.

    5. If we don't count Riley's and we know she was born on December 8, how can we count Jack's who is just 'sometime close to Josh's'.

    7. Well, if we interpret Chet coming back to town BECAUSE one of his sons' birthdays was coming up, then it becomes a plot point. And if it's a plot point, then I don't see why we can't count it.

      Delete
    8. Because then what about Amy's, where her birthday is definitely not a plot point?

I'd be happy enough to count it, but then I think we also have to count Riley's. At the very least, Shawn knowing her birthday was a plot point; even if the celebrating of it wasn't.

      Delete
    9. I don't count Jack's and don't think it's the same as Amy's. That episode takes place on Amy's birthday weekend. It's her birthday right there and then. Jack's simply got one "coming up". That could mean it's next week, that could mean it's next month.

    1. In answer to your question, I'd say Shawn doesn't really care much about birthdays, and tends to kinda make it about him.

Like in Kid Gloves, he competes with Cory about who gets worse presents from his dad.
In Wheels, he doesn't even care about the Cory vs Alan conflict, and tries to get Cory to skip his party so they can go on a road trip to Atlantic City.
In Family Trees, he shows up drunk to Alan's party, though it's a really tough time for him so I forgive him.
City Slackers ends up being about Shawn, not about Amy, and there's no reason for Shawn to care about Amy's birthday, but he still kinda steals her birthday present.
Girl Meets Master Plan might be the first time he is completely selfless with someone's birthday, and I think he gives Maya a present and everything.

I'm surprised there wasn't any Shawn birthday episode. Huh.

      Delete
    2. I love Shawn; I do. But it's not just a birthday thing - Shawn was, throughout BMW, quite selfish. It's understandable, but it is there.

In GMW he seems to have outgrown this though; and any remnants there might be, I suspect will fade quite quickly now that he pretty much has everything he wants.

The look of the show is much more network and less Disney. They even had a "first period" joke, which seems shocking for Disney.

And the big secret was truly unexpected. More like something they would put on ABC Family then Disney. It terms of Disney this was like watching The Crying Game for the first time without any spoilers.

    1. Eh, I'm just glad they finally decided to grow up. The immaturity of the Channel was getting annoying.
It's a pity the sequel to my favorite show ever wasn't the one to bring the change, but I enjoyed the two episodes of Andi Mack I watched, and I will keep watching.
Honestly, I'm just worried Andi Mack will end up like GMW, being too mature for the target audience, and getting cancelled too soon.

      Delete
    2. I don't think GMW could have handled slavery maturely.

Cory would give the kids homework and Maya would be like "We're such slaves!" And Cory would completely change the topic to slavery and give them a brief introduction to slavery, and the 14 year old teenagers would go "Oh my God." like they'd never heard about slavery before.

Riley would be like "How can friends sell each other into slavery! Would you sell me into slavery, Peaches?" and Maya would say "No," and then they'd say "Thunder" "Lightning" and then they'd both cry.

And Farkle would say "Well, in my dictatorship over Mars, slavery doesn't exist. Btw, wanna be my queens?" And Lucas would say "Guys, I think slavery is bad." and everyone would act like the secret to life had been revealed to them.

And there'd be a B plot where Ava treats Auggie 'like a slave' until Topanga intervenes and we'd be supposed to believe that two kids playing 'henpecked husband' is comparable to the kind of stuff you see on 12 Years A Slave or The Butler.

Bottom line is, Girl Meets World couldn't pull off a "Dangerous Secret" or "Cult Fiction" kinda episode about slavery without changing absolutely everything about the show, and I'm glad they didn't they cause it's a serious topic that deserves respect.

      Delete
    3. James Selmon-I agree with you. If they wanted to go in a more mature direction, they could have retooled GMW. There was no reason why the show could not have handled more mature topics and issues. New writers may have been needed. Characters grew and changed on BMW so I don't see why the same type of growth could not have happened on GMW.

      Delete
    4. Kit Cosmo - I've been thinking about this, and you're right. A show can mature during its run, like BMW did, and Girl Meets World could have covered serious topics. I stand by my opinion that they'd need to change A LOT of things, but they could.
It's just that I watched a bunch of GMW's "Very Special Episodes" and they all were kinda preachy and not really good at handling their topics (except the forgiveness project one), so that's why I was so, um, agressive in my beliefs. Sorry, y'all.

      Delete
    5. Meh. Given the fact Disney shows never go past 4 seasons; they couldn't have matured enough in the time left. When you grow up as a show, you need to do it gradually - if you come from 'lah-di-dah, we're not even going to mention the Khmer Rouge call out the Holocaust by name' to a serious episode about something to do with slavery or racism (the second is better; as it's more of a current as well as global issue); you will lose half your audience. Even people who support the message being broadcast, might be watching GMW to -escape- from that kind of message. Not every show has to be filled with messages and meaning.

So to do it without losing too many, you have to gradually mature the show - by the time it was at a point where it could have been done; series 4 would have been finished. Besides, I'm unconvinced that Disney is wholly to be blame for the immaturity of the show.

      Delete
    6. "Besides, I'm unconvinced that Disney is wholly to be blame for the immaturity of the show."

While I hold the opinion that many of Girl Meets World's wrongs can be directed at the Disney Channel (among them an overall feeling of Kids Rule!, which is characteristic of the network, wherein mature adults aren't exactly common).

However, Will has a point--it is unfair to blame it entirely on the Disney Channel.

Personally, I think GMW's biggest weaknesses in delivering the more serious episodes, on a general basis, derive from issues that are independent of the Disney Channel. Or at least, these problems could still exist if it wasn't airing on Disney Channel.

The first is the fact that the entire group of four (or five, if we must count Say) has to learn the lesson at once. Boy Meets World often had only one character learn the lesson directly.

A good, if somewhat simplified, example of this dynamic, that I've used before, is "Chick Like Me" compared to "STEM." In the first episode, only Shawn really learned the lesson, as Cory was more or less aware of it from the beginning; in "STEM" the entire group has to learn the lesson, and it feels lackluster.

While I think the entire group of kids all being together (as opposed to Cory and Eric's independency for several seasons) is likely due to Disney's influence, it's hardly without precedent that BMW's writers didn't tend to do quite so well with larger groups--we've all brought up our points on Jack and Rachel and Angela being added to the main cast.

The somewhat more syndicated feeling of GMW plays a role too. Since the rerunning schedule of GMW was a little sporadic while it was airing (it has one slot on the time schedule as of the post), there is a sense that a lot of episodes are a little more stand-alone. While there is nothing wrong with that in itself, it does raise points of concern with the lesson-based episodes (Most notably, "Girl Meets She Don't Like Me," where Riley, whose last focus episode was "Permanent Record," [to say nothing of even earlier episodes] is suddenly completely unaware of the evil going on in the world around her).

  21. A little BMW related TV trivia last night. Jonathan Del Arco, who played Nunzio in Last Tango in Philly has been a recurring character on The Closer and is now a series regular on Major Crimes, had an episode based on his character last night for the first time. The drug dealer bad guy was played by Richard Portnow, who played Stan the Plumber King from Can I Help to Cheer You?. And of course the drug dealer lived in - wait for it - Topanga. I kid you not. I looked for a BMW connection in the writing and directing staff of the episode, but found none. Perhaps there is some connection I just didn't find. Seemed like too big of a coincidence.

Also for those who watch Once Upon A Time, I recently read that Alex Desert - Eli Williams from BMW - will be playing the Tin Man from Oz on an upcoming episode. He was recently on an episode of The Flash playing the same character that he played on the 1990 Flash TV series. It seems whenever the CW uses a character that was in the original series, they use the same actor in the part. That's pretty cool.

    ReplyDelete
  22. On the Nunzio bit--I'm curious as to whether that might have been the actors' idea. If there wasn't much in the way of correlation by way of the writing staff, then maybe Del Arco or Portnow just mentioned it and they threw it in.

  24. As a little Disney channel trivia, when GMW premiered in June 2014 Disney had 5 other live action shows running current episodes (Jessie, Austin & Ally, Dog with a Blog, I Didn't Do It and Liv & Maddie). With Liv & Maddie's final episode showing last night Disney channel is pretty much a completely different beast than it was 3 years ago. The oldest program running new episodes is K.C. Undercover which started in February 2015, though I guess the Ross kids from Bunk'd have been on the air continually since September of 2011.

Back in 2014 I actually liked most of the first run shows, now with L&M gone I wouldn't watch anything they're running. Times have changed.

  25. I've seen the first 2 episodes of Andi Mack. They are really good. I'm excited to watch the show.

    1. I watched the second episode last night. The show does have promise.

It is so unlike anything that Disney has aired in years. The closest things to it would be Even Stevens and Lizzy McGuire. But of course it would remind me of Lizzy since the same people developed both shows.

      Delete
    2. While I'm happy for the kids watching Disney Channel to finally have something...different to watch instead of the Laugh Production Live Action Universe, I don't intend to watch Andi Mack.

I know it's petty, but I don't know if I can watch it and not end up asking "Why didn't Girl Meets World get to be like this?" Setting aside the story elements of course, and asking the question only in terms of actual production--there's something to be said for sets that are unique to the individual show, and not recycled from an old show (I noticed early on that GMW's set were just repainted and had used to be on "Shake it Up!")

      Delete
    3. Cryptid - I believe that in that respect GMW was a victim of its times. All the shows that aired for years until Stuck in the Middle premiered had the same look/feel/props/crossover universe tie to them. SitM was the beginning of that coming to an end.

GMW wasn't the only show to suffer for it I believe. Best Friends got canned after only 2 seasons, and it wasn't any worse than shows that aired longer. Truthfully I believe that if Disney hadn't wanted Dove Cameron working for them for the Descendants 2 movie, Liv & Maddie wouldn't have gotten a 4th season.

If GMW has started in 2012 or 2013 (albeit with a different cast of kids) it would have gotten 4 or even 5 seasons. As it was the show was a victim of a sea change at the network (and the wrong demographic).

      Delete
    4. Then again, I think I might just be bitter.

I'm fairly certain that bits and pieces of the BMW set cropped up in other places, eventually. Probably even--if BMW was part of the TGIF line-up, then it's a near certainty that other shows in that line-up shared parts of the sets.

I know the hallway sets were eventually rebuilt for Nickelodeon's "iCarly."

I'm certain that the classroom sets were reused, but hey, one classroom is as good as any on a sit-com.

It's a silly thing to get upset about, but a lot of the DCLAU felt like the shows were little more than palette swaps for one another a lot of the time. And I know that sets shouldn't matter nearly as much as story, but when the overall themes of "Friendship!" and "Kids Rule!" are a constant of the channel, a little more difference would be nice.

"If GMW has started in 2012 or 2013 (albeit with a different cast of kids) it would have gotten 4 or even 5 seasons. As it was the show was a victim of a sea change at the network (and the wrong demographic)"

Maybe. It's pretty hard to imagine anyone other than Blanchard or Carpenter playing the leads--the casting director did his job well in that regard.
But the problems the show had, or at least some of the problems (shipping) would likely remain.
That said, GMW had its share of dumb luck--we've all speculated that the Triangle would not have been drawn out nearly so long had Shelton, who played Uncle Josh, not have been injured and out of commission for a year following his motorcycle accident.

  26. Just a little aside for our Flyers-loving Cory and Eric: the last time the Detroit Red Wings missed the playoffs, Cory, Shawn, and Topanga were 8, Eric 13, and Riley -12 (rough estimates of course.) =P

And Feeny's current events lessons probably would have concerned the fall of the Berlin Wall.

    1. Adding on to this, the last time the Philadelphia Flyers won the Stanley Cup was in 1975, before any of our heroes were born. So Cory and Eric have literally spent their entire lives never watching their hockey team win it all.

For current events, Feeny would have likely been discussing King Faisal's (Saudi Arabia) assassination.

    2. The 1975 Broad Street Bullies championship was their third in a row if I remember correctly. My poor Rangers have only won 1 Stanley Cup in my 57 years on the planet, so I can commiserate with them.

Unless I'm mistaken they have never seen the Eagles win it all either. 1960 is the last time Philly won the NFL championship. And it's been since 1983 as well since the 76ers won it all.

So no one but the Phillies have won it all for them. They come from a city rich in sports history but poor in championships.

      Delete
    3. Actually, I just doubled checked Wikipedia. The Flyers won in the 73-74 season and the 74-75 season. They've been division champs a few times since, but never the Stanley Cups.

The Phillies may have a couple of rings under their belt, but I still remember, ten years ago, (when my awesome Red Sox were kicking ass and taking names on their way to the World Series), the Philadelphia Phillies made history: 10,000 losses in Major League Baseball.

      Poor Cory and Eric.

Yeah, the Phillies are the losingest (is that a word?) team in professional sports history. It's honestly sad that they're the most successful Philly franchise, at least in terms of recent championships. I enjoyed watching Ruben Amaro run the franchise into the ground, though. Fuck Philly.

      Delete
    5. Yeah, I just checked. Losingest is a word.

Oxford dictionaries define it as an informal term meaning "losing more often than others of its kind; least successful."

In other words, Feeny will still mark points off if you use it in an essay. Mr. Turner might or might not accept it.

      Delete
    6. To be fair the Phillies aren't the "least successful" team in MLB history, their winning percentage is 25th out of the current 30 teams. They have just been at it longer than most teams as their first season was 1883. The Dodgers and Giants will get to 10,000 losses very soon and the Cubs hit it in 2015. Part of being around a long time is winning and losing a lot.

      Yeah but:

      A. The Phillies are the worst non-expansion team by all-time win percentage

      B. The teams they're ahead of will see more fluctuation in their percentages with each season than the Phillies

      C. They've literally been around for 130 years and have only won two World Series

Also define "very soon" <_< The Giants are basically 5 full seasons of losses off of 10,000, while the Dodgers are ~3 full seasons of losses off.

also the giants have won more games than any other team in major league history so suck on that

I'd imagine that'd be true of most of the cast. Of the kids, only Carpenter had anything...tonally different under her belt. If memory serves, she was on "Orange is the New Black." Blanchard was on Spy Kids 4D: All the Time in the World but that movie...wasn't good.

As far as the grown-ups go, Ben Savage was on "Criminal Minds" a couple years ago as Young Agent Gideon. He did his job well (Ben continues to prove that he plays "angry" well) but I couldn't look at him and not think Cory Matthews, though this is likely due to Savage being very distinctive looking.

    4. Happy Easter. Interesting fact - this holidays my son has gotten really into watching BMW. He's currently a bit over halfway through season 2.

Finds it funnier than GMW; which is interesting in that it does kinda suggest it's not purely nostalgia that makes people think BMW is better. (Even true for those who didn't watch it at the time; due to references to stuff happening at the time.)

Interesting to hear about your son, Will. He's what now? Fourteen? That's about the age Shipping and I fell in love with BMW.

What does he think of Feeny? More than anything else, I think this was what GMW was missing. A genuine Feeny.

    6. He's fifteen as of March. He's away at his grandmothers for effectively three days; but I'll find out what he thinks of Feeny when he gets back. He certainly quotes Harley at me a lot.

    7. So he's back from his grandparents now. He says he really likes Feeny; thinks he's really funny but also very stern when giving out his lessons.

And I agree Cryptid. They should never have tried to push Cory as Feeny. If Cory was going to be anyone (rather than, oh I don't know, -him-?), it should have been GMW's version of Turner.

      Delete
    8. The thing of it is, Disney Channel has a long history of having terrible, horrible teachers in their series--while Cory was dreadful compared to Feeny and Turner, a case can be made that he's actually the best recurring teacher from the line of shows from "It's a Laugh Productions" (The Spanish teacher from "Permanent Record" is the best, but she's only in that one episode, so it doesn't really count).

And remembering that Disney Channel originally wanted to reboot "Boy Meets World" itself, rather than continue the franchise...honestly, I have to wonder whether Disney ever gave a damn about doing this right in the first place.

      Delete
    9. I'll take your word for it. My exposure to Disney has more been their movies. I'm not certain; but I think GMW is the only Disney-channel thing I've watched; certainly the only one I've watched as an adult. As my mother was a teacher, I was probably more lenient on some of his mistakes than most, but a lot harder on the whole concept of teaching his own daughter.

Probably not. I'm not a fan of reboots; only time I've really invested in them is when a show's premise has been good; but either due to poor casting, poor writing or poor scheduling it doesn't get the go it deserves.

On that note, he's also now finished season 2. My favorite thing he's said though: "I wonder what Frankie and Joey would do if Harley and Griff met?"

School holidays are almost over though, so he'll probably go through season 3 a lot more sedately.

    11. Will van Roekel-I'm not sure I can picture Cory as GMW's version of Turner, because Cory isn't cool enough to be Turner. Out of curiosity, what kind of character would you imagine to be the new Feeny? Do you think GMW needed a Feeny type figure?

I would have liked the new Feeny to be someone in their building. Maybe he or she babysat for Riley and Auggie as kids, or is someone she met when she was slightly older. It would have been great for her to have someone outside of the family to discuss things with.

      Delete
    12. Kit - You're right Cory is not cool enough; but I was talking about in regards to being 'the new teacher' rather than how he acted. A lot of what we complained about in regards to his teaching, could have been okay if he was the new teacher finding his way, rather than this 'best teacher ever' vibe they were trying to sell.

I think they needed a Feeny; but unless they were going to focus a lot more time at home than they did rather than at school (in which case I would drop the Cory teacher idea entirely), it needed to be at least a senior teacher. And that's the thing isn't it? Not only Riley, but none of them had anything to discuss things with other than each other. And yeah, I know Topanga gives off a perfect image, and I know Cory has often been shown to do anything just to keep her happy, but his 'I do what she wants' schtick got old; and I'd prefer they could disagree and then have someone else to talk to who could point out they were both being stupid. I understand that parents/teachers on Disney are not usually good; but I can still be annoyed by it.

      Delete
    13. " A lot of what we complained about in regards to his teaching, could have been okay if he was the new teacher finding his way, rather than this 'best teacher ever' vibe they were trying to sell."

I don't disagree with this position, though like I said, Cory actually was the best teacher (other than one-shots) on the Disney Channel. Or at least treated with the most respect.

On one Disney Channel show, "Best Friends Whenever," a strict teacher learned that her test had been compromised (the protagonist time-traveled to get the answers, and then felt guilty). Her response was to give a harder test, which was her right. The protagonists responded by going back in time to prevent her from ever becoming a teacher in the first place.

It's been over a year and that one storyline still makes me angrier than anything Cory ever did.

In regards to needing a Feeny, it's important to acknowledge that Feeny himself is rather unique. He wasn't just Cory's teacher, but also neighbor.

Usually in sitcoms, especially from the 80s and 90s (and the trope continues today), the neighbor was either a "nemesis" to the child protagonist (I use the term loosely, as there's rarely much in the way of genuine malice, but the first one that comes to mind is Dennis the Menace) or else the neighbor is a major headache to the central family (Urkel and Kimmy Gibbler come to mind).

So with that in mind, Feeny broke those preconceptions. He and Cory clashed occasionally, but they also grew to understandings with one another. And it should be noted that however often Cory regresses in his character development (his hatred of change), his relationship with Feeny isn't one of them. He is NEVER as disrespectful to Feeny even in Season 2 as he was in Season 1.

Combining what we got from Feeny on paper, and coupling it with the masterful performance of Bill Daniels, and I'm honestly not sure how you could even attempt to replicate it.

      Delete
    14. Well no, they weren't going to replicate Feeny exactly. But the 'generation xerox' trope pisses me off no end. Is Riley -really- 'Cory'? Or Maya Shawn? And don't get me started when Peyton says that he thinks Lucas is like Topanga. (Granted; this was from an interview before the show started airing.) My point was more that they did need a senior teacher and/or adult not directly connected to the kids. This could have been done as two roles; especially if they were still going to combine parent with one of the teachers.

Generally, I despise when continuations say 'this character from the original? Well this character from the continuation is -just like them-'. Maya is Maya. She has some similarities to Shawn but saying she's GMW's version of Shawn detracts from how she's different. She's insanely more loyal than Shawn was, especially in the early seasons of BMW. Shawn's a very good friend to Cory; but he occasionally did things that put Cory in a situation which Maya would never put Riley in.

The only time I think this i hs kinda fair, is that Farkle really is Minkus. Or what Minkus probably would have been if allowed to grow.

      Delete
    15. Will van Roekel-I misunderstood what you meant. It would have been great if Cory was new to teaching. Maybe he did something else and then decided on teaching as a second career. I wouldn't want Cory to be a brand new teacher, but it would have been great if he had been teaching for less than five years prior to the start of the show.

I love the idea of splitting the Feeny role in two. There could a teacher at school and someone at home. Instead of always talking to each other at the bay window, it would have been great if there was someone in the apartment building they could go to for advice or a guidance counselor at school.

      Delete
    16. School was always a tremendously important part of the original show (and notably almost never on any other Disney Channel show), so I would think that having the

How long had Cory been teaching anyhow? He doesn't seem to be terribly experienced in the original pilot, though we're later told he helped get Janitor Harley his job, and Harley's Head Custodian so it has to have been for at least a few years.

Splitting the Feeny role in two is not a bad idea, but then again part of the reason Feeny worked so well was that he was both Teacher and Neighbor (and by God, he was so much more). I kind of think the constance of presence is kind of necessary to the dynamic.

"Instead of always talking to each other at the bay window, it would have been great if there was someone in the apartment building they could go to for advice or a guidance counselor at school."

Kit, did you ever watch "Life With Derek"? A guidance counselor played a larger role in that show than in any other I can think of. And his advice was generally pretty good.

      Delete
    17. Cryptid - You're right, but we've established we're not going to get a perfect fit for a Feeny-like character. And to be honest, a lot of the problems for me with GMW; especially once I sat down and actually watched BMW, was that there was too much reliance on BMW. I don't mean the inbuilt audience who were there to see Corpanga's continuing story. I mean too much overlap in storylines, too many times they shoved the 'oh this is just this character' aspect. And we already have a teacher who's also a father, having another senior teacher who's also a neighbour is stretching credibility.

My son pointed out today that one of the reasons he likes BMW more is they try to solve things themselves first, royally screw everything, then go to Feeny or Cory's parents to bail them out. This is missing, as they all just go to the Bay Window and fix everything themselves.

You definitely have a point about the character aspect, but several of the "repeated storylines" (at least as far as individual episodes go) took place in Season One, as I recall--the Ski Lodge excepted. And a few of those repeated-storyline episodes were standard sit-com faire--a class election, one out of two being invited to a party, etc.

"My son pointed out today that one of the reasons he likes BMW more is they try to solve things themselves first, royally screw everything, then go to Feeny or Cory's parents to bail them out. This is missing, as they all just go to the Bay Window and fix everything themselves."

      That's it in a nutshell.
It was rare that there were actual shenanigans in GMW, as opposed to simply talking about problems. Riley and Maya didn't usually do things that got them in trouble--and even when they should have gotten in trouble, they didn't.
Sometimes it wasn't so bad ("Jexica" is thoroughly enjoyable and the solution being found through discussion is perfectly acceptable, since the worst that happened was Riley finding out Social Media has a dark side), but usually the lack of consequences was far more irritating.

      Delete
    19. "And a few of those repeated-storyline episodes were standard sit-com faire--a class election, one out of two being invited to a party, etc."

Yeah, that's what I thought at first, but when my son draws very strong parallels - as in, more than just a class election story, or there's direct quotes lifted from BMW, it gets a bit much. But I agree the character aspect is worse.

And yeah; he didn't actually use the word 'shenanigans' but he did specify he liked the fact Cory and Shawn got in trouble and didn't just go 'Bay window'!

The fact he's a boy thus would be more likely to face issues that Cory/Shawn deal with probably helps; but honestly, the fact that BMW dealt with sexism better than GMW ever did states something.

      Delete
    20. I can forgive direct quotes, seeing as there weren't terribly many. (I remember "How ya doin'" and "Uh oh...Uh Oh....UH OH," though I'm sure there are more).

"The fact he's a boy thus would be more likely to face issues that Cory/Shawn deal with probably helps; but honestly, the fact that BMW dealt with sexism better than GMW ever did states something."

While "STEM" isn't the worst episode of GMW by any means [I'm more disappointed than angry, since there was actually potential for a really good episode], I don't disagree. Indeed, "Wake Up Little Cory" and "Chick Like Me" are among the best episodes in their respective seasons.

As I've said before, I think those particular episodes of BMW succeeded, in part, because the lesson was focused.

Cory didn't need to learn much of anything in "Chick Like Me," while Shawn learned a LOT. And I doubt Shawn learned much of anything in "Wake Up Little Cory," while Cory and Topanga (and Turney, a little bit) learned the lesson.

But the entire group learned the lesson in "STEM" and the message was diluted (There are other reasons why the episode isn't so good, but they largely branch from that major reason).

      Delete
    21. As I watched Friends much earlier than I did BMW, 'how ya doin' makes me think of Joey more anyway.

I'm not sure Topanga really learned the lesson even - I think she knew it talready. I wasn't a big fan of the 'Cory likes Topanga' teasing Shawn was doing; but I do greatly enjoy that episode.

I haven't seen "Chick like Me" as recently; but based on current viewing habits, might see it by the end of the week unless he actually gets some homework. (Seriously, do they even -get- homework today?)

      Delete
    22. Dang, your son is plowing through the series. That's great to hear. I always love it when I hear of someone starting it for the first time.

      Delete
    23. Yeah. He's loving it. Eric is his favorite character. I asked him yesterday what he thought about the GMW versions of the same characters and he said - Eric is too stupid in GMW, Cory is more childish in GMW. Shawn and Topanga seem about the same to him.

He's just finished 'An Affair to Forget' and recognised Jennifer - by name at least.

      Delete
    24. Eh, by the time he finishes, I suspect he'll think that Eric and Cory's GMW versions aren't that different from their Season 7 versions (if anything, Eric got smarter, if "Semi-formal" is taken into consideration)

I'm curious to see what he'll think of the franchise as a whole.

      Delete
    25. Which is somewhat of a blight regardless; but is one of the reasons not that fond of season 7. However, I think the small hints in GMW that Eric may have been somewhat deliberately exaggerating how dumb he is flew over his head.

      Delete
    26. Cryptid456-I haven't seen "Life With Derek" but I know plan to watch a few episodes.

I still think the show using Auggie for most of the subplots was a giant mistake, although that may be because I couldn't stand Eva, who was usually involved in his storylines (to clarify, I have nothing against the child actors. I think they were just given horrible material to work with. I blame the writers for this, not the actors).

I would have loved more shenanigans on GMW, and less focus on the triangle/relationship drama. It's as if because the show was about teenage girls, romance was the go-to plot device/story-arc. Someone should have had the writers watch a marathon of "I Love Lucy," "Laverne & Shirley," and "Kate & Allie," and said adapt this type of dynamic and make the storylines Disney appropriate.

      Delete
    27. Kit - It wasn't so much Auggie as such; as much as that it sidelined Topanga to being just 'the mother'. Whilst Amy did fall into that from time to time, Topanga always, even when full-on in the Cory/Topanga relationship stage, was more than just a love interest. And Alan, whilst certainly the father-figure, was more than just 'a father'.

It's more than just that. Honestly, I would guesstimate that at least half, at least from season 4 onwards, and maybe even seasons 2 and 3, of the stories from BMW had some sort of romance-angle to it. It's not even the idea of pairing off; as for Cory/Topanga at least, that was being set in motion even in season 2. It's this whole concept that their world is going to destroy them if they don't get the guy of their dreams. Which is a problem with teen dramas in general; made worse with girl teens. It's stereotyping of the laziest form. (Mind you, Eric and Shawn both fell into the guys stereotype of 'guy is a player' for long periods).

      Delete
    28. With regards to Auggie Matthews, I do not dislike the character himself (the same cannot be said for Lucas Friar or Zay Babineaux). I do agree that he's overused.

However, using a much younger sibling more often than necessary does appear to be a habit Disney has. The show "Dog With A Blog" (Didn't see it? Lucky you) featured three kids, one of them about Riley's age, one about three years older, and the third about Auggie's age.

Within the context of the show itself, I didn't mind Auggie by himself. It was the fact that he brought in Ava, a loud, rude, obnoxious, disgustingly disrespectful brat. Worse, Ava treated Auggie terribly for most of the first two seasons and the audience was supposed to think it was cute. If the roles were reversed or if Riley had a little sister who had a little "boyfriend" who treated her the same way Ava treated Auggie, there would be no way it would be tolerated.

And Will's definitely right--the worst part of Auggie (and Ava) was that it tied up far too much of Topanga's screen time. I wanted so much more for Topanga.

And for Auggie for that matter--he doesn't interact with Cory very often, and I think it'd be worth a look.

Or Riley, perhaps even especially so. Riley and Auggie usually have a certain sweetness to their relationship that is almost unique among Disney Channel siblings (who aren't twins). Riley seems to genuinely enjoy his company. I would have loved to see this explored more--I've made no secret of my desire for a "Girl Meets Scapegoat" episode where Riley voluntarily takes the blame for something bad Auggie does.

      Delete
    29. With regards to the shenanigans, or lack thereof, on GMW, in comparison to romance:

This is probably a thing that plagues the entire medium, teenagers taking romance far too seriously, perhaps especially on the Disney Channel--I don't think they've ever had a show where romance wasn't a huge plot element, and they've also leaned heavily on "one true love." A lot of their shows have had characters date Love Interest That Lasts More Than One Episode, break up, and then near the end get back together with LITLMTOE.

      Delete
    30. To be fair, BMW has that as well - arguably even worse than GMW; it just doesn't seem as bad because of season 2. If your experience is seasons 3-7; there is no doubt that there's a 'one true love' element. You can argue, especially if you include seasons 1 and 2, that they earned it in a way Riley and Lucas didn't. It's a lot better before they retcon it later that 'we've been in a relationship our entire lives'. And your end description pretty much sums up Friends of all shows. I don't think it's how relevant romance might be to the major plot episodes so much as what's done in between times. Nearly all the big 'this is going to effect the rest of the series' episodes have involved the Corpanga relationship. (There are some exceptions; but at least half); but when it's not a key Corpanga plotline; Cory has plenty of stories where Topanga's name is only mentioned in passing - even when they're dating.

That's what I mean by relationship drama. I have no problem with part of the show focusing on issues of love/romance/relationships. My issue was that it seemed to be almost their whole reason for being and the driving force of their life. (I know this is a slight exaggeration.)

Cryptid456-"I've made no secret of my desire for a "Girl Meets Scapegoat" episode where Riley voluntarily takes the blame for something bad Auggie does."

I wish they did this episode. Riley and Auggie were cute together, and I probably would like Auggie better if there was more time spent with Auggie and Riley, and less time with Auggie and Ava. It would have been great if they did an episode that paired Auggie with Cory, and Riley with Topanga.

Exactly. My problem was that GMW didn't have enough in between times.

    32. Kit - I agree with you in that case. As I said, BMW with Cory certainly had an element of one true love about it; but he copes better (scary, ain't it?) when things go wrong than Riley does. Actually, despite my dislike of the Maya/Josh angle they seemed to be pushing, Maya was pretty grounded about that.

And yes, I would have liked a scapegoat episode. It's not just Disney - for siblings that far apart in ages, Riley and Auggie get on scarily well. They get on far better than even Cory and Morgan (granted, that could be because Morgan wasn't seen much). I'd say better than Cory and Eric as kids; but they are pretty much the worst age gap to be - too far away to really have anything in common, but close enough for Cory to 'cramp Eric's style'. And given Eric's womanizing tendencies, it probably annoyed him how Cory didn't even have to try.

      Delete
    33. To be fair, with Cory (and I'll elaborate more when the time comes to discuss Cory), there was an element that he and Topanga, were simply weird that way. Shawn wanted to imitate them in high school because he wanted that sort of security, but by the time they were in college he had changed his mind about imitating them. Unfortunately (or fortunately), he had adopted their traits anyhow (Recall "The Truth About Honesty" where Shawn was slightly aghast that he had "Cory'd" it up with Angela. "You two. Make my life. A living hell")

With Riley, it seems that we get some episodes where she holds the One True Love ideal (though why she thinks Friar, who treated her rather indifferently quite often or else threw tantrums [really, there's no other word for his reactions] if anybody else expressed interest in her, would be her One True Love I'll never know). But we also get some episodes where Riley doesn't seem to hold that ideal--"Goodbye," whatever its shortcomings, ended their relationship nicely.

Of course, I'd have preferred Riley to have one or two major love interests a season, and learn important things from each relationship.

Will, you live in Australia, with its gazillion venomous spiders and snakes and crocodiles and the bunyip, and THAT is what scares you?!

All jokes aside, I do think there was value in having a scapegoat episode. Whether Riley was covering for Auggie or Maya, it would have added a significant element--how far these kids are willing to go for each other.

Lucas Friar apparently got kicked out of school for fighting one of Zay's bullies but it didn't resonate (Because Zay really, really sucked when he started out, and Friar went back to being boring after the revelation).

Alternatively, I would have liked to see Riley step up to protect Auggie if he's being bullied at school.

Or an "Uncle Daddy" type episode, where Riley realizes that it's one thing to watch Auggie for an evening when their parents are out on a date, but another to keep watch over him for a longer period of time.

"I'd say better than Cory and Eric as kids; but they are pretty much the worst age gap to be - too far away to really have anything in common, but close enough for Cory to 'cramp Eric's style'. And given Eric's womanizing tendencies, it probably annoyed him how Cory didn't even have to try."

A fair point, Will. Of course, this element of strife did allow for some of the best moments of the series--the Rollercoaster of Doom was instigated by Cory trying to prove he was cool, in part to Eric, and it was great.

    35. Firstly; I have no issue with a one true love story; but then I don't watch either show for life lessons - and as we watch it with our son; we're quick to point out that what Cory/Topanga had is highly unlikely to happen to him.

What concerns me about Riley is I feel she's still got this romantic notion that Cory/Topanga is the way it's meant to happen. You're right though that it was a bit inconsistent. Even in the episode where they finally get together, she is proclaiming it as 'her first boyfriend', not her one true love.

Even Cory, and hinted at Topanga, had some dancing around with other relationships.

As for the venomous population of Australian animals - I live in Sydney. Chances of meeting any of those creatures is less likely than seeing one of the Hemsworth boys.

I have no problem with the strife. A certain amount of strife is important. And to be fair, on a number of occasions, especially when it comes to Topanga, Eric has been there for him. But this is what annoys me about GMW so much - most of their strife is created by themselves; and could be easily avoided. The triangle, for example!

    1. Currently, according to the TV listings in my area, GMW airs once a day, at midnight.

Phasing out the old live-action shows, to make room for the new ones, and doing so very quickly, is hardly a new concept as far as the live-action shows developed by "It's A Laugh Productions" (one of Disney's branches) are concerned. I remember most of their shows tended to fade out very quickly.

It's just a bit more conspicuous now given that GMW had a rather abrupt ending, compared to "Jessie" or "Austin & Ally," both of which had four seasons and had far more definitive endings. (They also brought A&A back for reruns, along with a couple of other old Disney shows. Disney is kind of tanking in the ratings)

The pulling of GMW might also be a way to keep the fan petitions for a fourth season down a bit.

On the whole, I don't think there's that much to it--though given some of the fan drama, it wouldn't completely surprise me if Disney would try to divert attention towards some of their other projects.

      Delete
    2. Austin & Ally, Jessie and Liv & Maddie are all shown multiple times a day on Disney. Disney even made a commercial telling its viewers that they shouldn't be sad L&M ended because they show every episode in reruns several times a day. When GMW went dark, it went dark, like they put the show in witness protection.

GMW has almost as many episodes in 3 seasons as L&M did in 4 so it's not like they play it once a day so the show doesn't get old. They run some of those other shows into the ground with all the reruns. Personally I think it's because Jacobs is trying to get someone else to pick up the show (or so he said) and Disney is burying it in retaliation so it fades from fan memory quickly.

    4. Okay...that's a fair point, 1960. I had forgotten that Jacobs was trying to find a new home for the show (I don't think it's going to happen). And Rider Strong did say that Disney had prevented them from telling more serious stories....

In any event, I have no intentions of watching Disney Channel ever again, and I'm kind of enjoying watching them suffer in the ratings.

      Delete
    5. I think at this point it's gone. The most likely second homes have already said 'no thanks'. I really feel he's doing a disservice by continuing to do that at this point - Sabrina in particular is really focused on her music right now as an example. And yeah, maybe Disney did stop them telling more serious stories; but that makes it less likely someone will pick it up now, though they may have if they'd been looking to pick it up originally.

      Delete
    6. I think that even if he found someone willing to continue the series, Sabrina might not be made available. She is under contract to Hollywood Records (Disney's recording company) and the Mouse House could just keep her on tour/offer her guest spots on ABC/Freeform/Disney shows so she was unavailable if they don't want her to appear.

I couldn't see the show continuing without all of the cast.

      Delete
    7. They could do that; but if they do then they're even lower than I thought. However, I do think if he was going to find someone he would have by now.

I also think the only ones that are absolutely necessary for a continuation are Cory, Topanga, Riley, Maya, Auggie (don't like him; but you can't just blink her brother out of existence), and, reluctantly, Lucas. Farkle could go to a selective school; or even private considering Minkus' money.

      Delete
    8. I have to agree with 1960--unless Jacobs were to go with a complete and total reboot (or a suspiciously similar family series where the focus is on an adolescent girl), I can't see this continuing without the main cast.

I'm rather irritated, to be honest. It debatable whether GMW ever got a fair shake on Disney in the first place, and somehow it got an absolutely toxic fandom (not that Twitter or Tumblr were ever not toxic pits in the first place)

      Delete
    9. Meh. In my experience most fandoms are fairly toxic today. Individual blogs and their followers can be fine; but anything which has a main forum, or a lot of following on Twitter/Reddit/Facebook is usually fairly toxic. If BMW had aired whilst this was a thing, I think it would have been just as bad. There would have been just as many shipping wars - never mind that it was quite clear that Cory/Topanga was how the writers envisioned it; some of the worst shipping wars have been based around pairings that no-one could seriously imagine in a million years.

This is a case where I might entertain a reboot; but only if it was done with a station that I thought would be likely to be fair, and let the stories they wanted to tell be told.

    1. I've seen all 4 episodes so far and I have enjoyed them. Not as much as I enjoyed GMW, but a lot of that was because of my love for BMW. Also some of the GMW love is that I really loved the casting for GMW (except Peyton, though I believe Disney forced him on Jacobs in a kind of power play for Jacobs getting his way with Rowan - too young for them) while it's a little too early to say how I will feel about the casting of AM.

The writing has been pretty solid so far with much more believable/adult stories. One thing I like is that they are playing Bex (Andi's mother/older sister) as more of an older sister so far even though she wants the mom title and authority. She clearly is learning on the fly, which is something parents tend to do when their kids are toddlers and not 13.

      Delete
    2. Personally, like I said before, while I'm happy that Disney has a decent show for their audience to watch, I won't be watching.

      It's not that I think Andi Mack is bad, it's that...well, I don't know.

It isn't wrong to call me "petty," but I wanted this realism for GMW. I wanted to watch Cory Matthews' daughter grow up and meet the world. And meet it in a real way, not in a what amounts to a live-action cartoon.

"Also some of the GMW love is that I really loved the casting for GMW (except Peyton, though I believe Disney forced him on Jacobs in a kind of power play for Jacobs getting his way with Rowan - too young for them) while it's a little too early to say how I will feel about the casting of AM."

Possible. As I recall Disney wanted a fourteen-year-old to play Riley, but Jacobs said that wasn't quite young enough for coming-of-age.

Funnily enough, Meyer actually applied for the role of "Elliot Matthews" Riley's one-year-older brother.

He didn't get the role--it went to Teo Halm, who was in the film "Earth to Echo," (which I never saw). The character was originally in the pilot, but then the show underwent "creative changes" and the character was dropped.

I'm not surprised Jacobs didn't find a new venue--though I must admit I have lingering thoughts of what might have been had the show aired originally on ABC, or else Netflix (If "Fuller House" is a ratings juggernaut).

      "Until next time"

I still have a lot of respect for Michael Jacobs, and I wish him well. Though I think a nice break would be good for him. And if he does come back, then for his own sake, I hope he finds a network that lets him do what he does best.

      Adieu, GMW.

It had some moments of genuine greatness and some moments where I asked "What the hell am I doing watching this?"

It was a ride...I just wish the journey had been a bit better

      Delete
    3. The thing is, the reason Fuller House is a success; is that they effectively treat as the continuing story; not 'the next generation'. So the original cast still have their own stories. Which is likely how Netflix would have treated it.

I'm just glad he's finally accepted it. It was good, most of the time, when viewed through the eyes of a child. When viewed as an adult, perhaps not. When viewed with someone nostalgic for Boy Meets World - definitely not.

Season 4 would've shown that what drew Farkle, Lucas and Zay to Riley and Maya was the deep friendship and respect they had for each other. And their relationship was the guide in how to meet the world. Especially our current world. Because to find love, friendship and respect. must be at the center of it. Cory and Topanga always knew that. So, as you all meet this world, we wish you friendship, respect and love.
Oh, and Auggie and Ava were forever.

    6. "Season 4 would've shown that what drew Farkle, Lucas and Zay to Riley and Maya was the deep friendship and respect they had for each other. And their relationship was the guide in how to meet the world."

That isn't necessarily bad, but it does sound redundant.

Wasn't it stated outright that Zay had asked his dad to transfer to New York because Lucas had texted him all about his friends? And Lucas back in "Sneak Attack" said to Missy he just wanted to be friends--and he looked around the room to Riley, Maya and Farkle, as if seeing them as an example.

(Not that it changes the fact that the first way he described the girls were as "a pretty brunette" and "a blond beauty" and despite being in her company for a year, didn't know Riley was a Knicks fan)

And I'm not sure Jacobs can say that Maya "respects" Riley seeing as the Riley Committee was almost certainly her idea [not that I condemn Maya (or Farkle) for it, since it started when they were very little and was more likely a Make Sure Riley Doesn't Cry Club than anything else]

More to the point, Maya often demands that Riley not change at all--which doesn't give a good chance in Meeting the World.

"Especially our current world. Because to find love, friendship and respect. must be at the center of it."

No disagreements here--there is a very troubling lack of respect among those who find themselves in opposition to one another. However, I'm more interested to see whether the writers would have been able to construct episodes around this.

"Cory and Topanga always knew that."

Is this a way of ret-conning the ret-con, and the slow build-up from friendship to relationship we saw in Seasons 1-3 was really how they happened as opposed to dating forever?

"Oh, and Auggie and Ava were forever."

Dear God tell me that was a joke. Ava treated Auggie terribly.
