20 Greatest Meets World Characters: #15. Lucas Friar

#15. Lucas Friar

Played By: Peyton Meyer (2014- )
Episode Count: 60 and counting, presumably 63 after season 3 ends
Role: Love interest for Riley and Maya, Riley's boyfriend, everyone's friend
Signature Episodes: (Girl Meets) the Secret of Life, Rules, Yearbook, Texas 1 and 2

If you haven't noticed, the font of these posts differs by who writes it. My font uses serifs because I'm a fancy guy and I like fancy things. Christian uses a bigger font because of his low reading comprehension. That's actually my primary motivation for using pictures in the reviews, is to help my buddy follow along. I don't pay attention to the font, other than changing the color to my signature indigo. I just do whatever the default is. It appears to be Times New Roman when in the editor, but it seems to shift to Arial maybe when actually viewing it. Not sure why. I haven't thought too much about it because I'm not a NERD. *EDIT* Actually none of that is true, Blogger is just a weird piece of crap that doesn't work properly and we got confused.

Lucas is a handsome guy. Riley falls into his lap on the subway and is instantly smitten. That's all of season one. He is vanilla ranchhand female wish fulfillment from a romance novel that you can buy for two dollars at the supermarket and the cover looks like this:
At the same time... that's still influential. Riley's decisions, actions, and feelings are all massively influenced by Lucas's presence. And very quickly we see that Maya's are as well. From a narrative perspective, he has no right to be this impactful, but nevertheless, he is a very handsome friend to two teenage girls, and they react in the only way humans can. Now that should be a flaw. Our shallow, hormone driven monkey brains ought to be regarded as a flaw, the way Shawn's and Eric's are, rather than celebrated like Riley's attraction to Lucas. If he had had any relatable or compelling qualities in season one, it wouldn't have been such a tough sell for us. On the other hand, he isn't actively annoying, like Farkle's first season, he's just boring. Yeah, that Lucas is so goshdarn nice and polite seems to be why his boringness is forgiven. Oh, and also, like, they tell us he's really smart a lot, but, like, okay.

By the time season 2 rolls around, the writers know how bad this is, and characters are regularly making jokes at Lucas's expense about how perfect he is. This made him infinitely more palatable. It's incredibly similar to the shift we saw in Boy Meets World when Cory and Topanga start referring to themselves as "freaks" and their relationship as abnormal. It's unbearable to watch either of these shows when they pretend that Lucas or the Corpanga relationship is remotely close to reality. So when they start poking fun at it, everyone is more willing to go along for the ride.

In Meets the Secret of Life, Lucas acquires his only real character trait. Lucas has beaten the crap out of people to defend Zay in the past. This brings into focus a massively, MASSIVELY important distinction between potential and action. You see something like Pink Flamingo Kid, which I dislike, where Shawn is about to start fighting his half brother to defend Cory, versus Back 2 School, where Eric and Harley actually put hands on each other, or Janitor Dad, where Shawn actually starts fighting a bully to defend his dad's honor (Crandall... What was WITH that guy?), both of which are great episodes. I wouldn't care if Lucas were willing to go to battle for his friends, I'm sure Farkle and the others would all claim they're willing to fight in defense of each other. Who cares! I love that Lucas has actually done it, he has actually fought someone to defend his best friend. And HOLY CRAP, there were negative consequences! This guy suffered huge consequences for his defining character trait. That's storytelling baby, that's how you get me invested in the story. This trait is used disappointingly sparingly, but it was seeded in Girl Meets Flaws, when Lucas was ready to fight the guy harassing Farkle, and was cemented in Girl Meets Rileytown when he's willing to fight Riley's bully. (Though, again, "willing to fight" is not nearly as compelling as actually doing it.) Similar to Farkle, they had a standout direction to take Lucas's character, but ultimately decided to make him barely exist in season 3.

Girl Meets Texas is where we feel the full effect of Lucas's impact on the girls. They both obviously have feelings for him, they're having one of their only real fights in the series (this alone makes him wildly more significant than Farkle), and they're both deeply invested in whether or not Lucas rides Tombstone the Bull. Riley wants him to try, while Maya doesn't want him in danger. The girls' feelings are directed by Lucas's actions, but what's interesting is that the reverse isn't necessarily true. Honestly this is something I love about Texas part 1. Lucas doesn't spend hours agonizing over this decision like he does with everything else involving The Triangle. He knows he wants to ride the bull. The girls have nothing to do with it, damn the girls, Lucas wants to ride Tombstone for himself. I love to see this in the Meets World universe. It brings back one of my favorite Shawn lines ever, from the Eskimo, "Now be my best friend, and get out of my way." It also reminds us of that moment I loved with Farkle in Meets Yearbook, where he resolves to be more like Donnie Barnes regardless of what his friends want.

When you stack Lucas up against Farkle, the biggest issue is about consistency. For the most part, you can predict how Lucas will react to everyday situations. I could walk up to you on the street and ask you to describe him, and you wouldn't have much trouble. Farkle is all over the place. He can react to the exact same thing in different ways depending on whatever the writers want him to do. When the question is asking for the best character, and I can't properly describe Farkle's character... that hurts his chances.

Further, when we compare their character traits, we've got "the smart one," which is not at all unique, and "a violent hero who has punched people in the face to protect his buddy." I can point out "the smart one" on every Disney Channel show. How many have the punching guy? Even though it's only significant in three episodes, it genuinely breaks the mold in a compelling way. That adds a ridiculous amount of value.

We've spent a lot of time, both here and on the Farkle post, comparing these two boys, but make no mistake, their rankings are not close. (Okay, yes, technically 15 and 16 are close numbers, but we had an obvious top 15 and the bottom 5 were a hodgepodge of like 10 characters we debated between, also Lucas almost beat #14) We can re-write 95% of the Girl Meets World scripts to remove Farkle, and have the episodes begin and end the same way. On the other hand, the series as it's been written simply does not work without Lucas. That alone creates a chasm between the #15 and #16 rankings. Then you add in his unique and compelling violent streak, his undeniably explosive chemistry with Maya, touching moments of reflection with Harley, his independence in Meets Texas, flashes of insecurity when Charlie shows up... I could keep going. Farkle is... what? Entertaining? Funny, sometimes? It's not even close. I fully understand liking Farkle more, I would absolutely rather hang out with Farkle for a day. (Both sound excruciating.) But as characters in a story, it's not even close.

But yeah. Please don't take this as an indication that we like Lucas. He's okay.

  1. Again, I agree more than I can really illustrate. I can't stand Lucas; he was a total jerk during the Triangle; he was way too obsessively controlling during the Ski Lodge; but he has undeniably had a huge impact on other characters.

You also make really good points about they had something to make Lucas different, more than just a 'handsome prince' but ignored it, as well as the owning that he has no depth.

Even when watching BMW, I have never had a problem with the Corpanga relationship; except when they pretend it's perfectly normal. Well, except for the retcon of them dating from age 2 or whatever. And pointing out that they point out that Lucas is just 'perfect' as a flaw in comparison is a point I never considered. Still don't really like him, but now it's more to do with how he's treated Riley apparently since they started dating than just for being Mr Perfect.

  2. Lucas is the epitome of First World Problems.

"Oh, golly. I can't decide between the two best girls in my grade because I can't hurt any feelings"

    *One year later*

    "I choose Riley."

We know he's got a violent streak but we've never really seen him do anything with it since Rileytown.

However, it is abundantly clear, he is more important to the story than Farkle is.

At least from what we've seen.

    1. I don't think that disgracing your family name in your home town is a first world problem. The Triangle is ass, but he DOES have more going on. Besides, I'd say Riley is far and away the master of first world problems on this show.

    2. The disgrace isn't a first world problem, you are correct.

However, Lucas also is a huge victim of 'Show, don't tell.'

    3. To be fair; a lot of the show is a victim of that; even a fair amount of BMW was. (Though, also to be fair, far less; and Lucas is probably the biggest perpetrator of telling rather than showing.)

    1. "Break up"? Are they even together? I'm seriously asking, I have no idea.

Either way, with only 3 episodes left in the series (probably), I don't think we're in for any serious changes in relationship statuses.

    2. They're together. Kinda. Just that Lucas is acting like kind of a jerk about what "being together" actually means. I think.

As long as the final episode, whether it's this season or next, isn't Riley and Lucas being engaged, I'm happy.

That, and whilst I'm not a fan of Lucas/Riley, I think Maya is far too together to really get caught up by the Prince Charming scenario; and I think she deserves far better than Lucas, if his behaviour towards Riley is any indication.

For the most part, yes, as much as I vehemently dislike Friar, there's little question that his role in GMW is major--and I'm honestly a little surprised he's this low (Christian said that he almost made #14, would that be Morgan Matthews?).

I'll elaborate a bit more on the specifics of my position when I get the chance, probably Friday.

  7. The monumental issue with Friar is he never really graduated to being anything more than a pretty boy facade, even when they were making fun of him. And when we got those few character building moments, we hung on to them as signs of life as potential for the him to turn the corner. Yet, the corner never came. He was beyond insufferable in the Triangle and hasn't made much impact since.

I agree that his overall impact on the universe puts him above Farkle, but in my opinion, that's a low bar in this case.

    1. This is Cryptid.

Doubling down on this, a huge issue with Frair in Season One is that he's part of the main cast, (though he misses several episodes). He's not like Topanga, who was only there some of the time.

It'd be one thing for Friar the Pretty Boy to be in the class above Riley and Maya, and therefore seen primarily at a distance. It's another thing entirely for Friar to be in the classroom every day (except when he's in Texas for a week at a time) and interact with Riley every day. The audience is eventually going to wonder, "Wait, he doesn't actually do anything. What's taking so long? Good grief, he's boring--what does Riley see in him?"

      Delete
  8. This is Cryptid.

I hate Friar. I hate Friar. I hate Friar. I have never despised a main character who is supposedly a protagonist more than I hate Friar. I'd rather be stuck in a room with Professor Umbridge from "Harry Potter" than with Friar.

There, now with that out of the way, we can move on.

It's unquestionable that Friar is, unfortunately, a very significant part of this show's universe. He's Riley's first crush and her first actual boyfriend--a dreadful boyfriend, but a boyfriend nevertheless.

Part of me wonders whether Friar was meant to be a deconstruction of Cory-and-Topanga. He was Riley's first love, but not her only love. There's definitely potential there: Riley has stated before that she feels intimidated by living up to the legacy of her parents. When we eventually get to Riley, I'll elaborate as needed.

I find it interesting that you bring up his willingness to fight, Sean. I like that in a character. I like that a lot. I like a character who stands up and tells the opposition "No, you move!" Some of my favorite books have characters who fight, the consequences be damned.

(Oh, and didn't Farkle stand up for Riley and Maya back in "Farkle's Choice"? Wait, that episode sucked. Never mind.)

But it fizzled out for me--it was great seeing Friar stand up for Farkle, and in so doing showing the first glimpses of actual emotional depth (16 episodes into the first season, not a good sign in retrospect). It was good seeing him confront the bully in "Secret of Life," especially since the conflict was actually physical. But I paused after "Rileytown," when Friar destroyed the countertops after hearing that Riley had been harassed by a classmate. It seemed a little too...I'm not sure how to describe it, but it does seem that maybe he's a little too strong.

And I definitely didn't like his reaction to Charlie or to Evan in "Ski Lodge." Friar's got far more than righteous anger backing his aggression. I went back to the our old comment boards:

--He wasn't angry because Evan was effectively a stranger (which while more understandable, still doesn't hold up since Friar and Riley barely knew one another in "Girl Meets Boy"), he was angry because Riley had had an apparently deep conversation with a boy.

This could be really serious, and has actually been part of Friar's character since "Semi-formal," when he threw a tantrum over Riley /maybe/ going to the dance with Charlie.--

With all that said, I am mildly surprised that Friar is this low on the list of 20 Greatest (Most Influential) Characters, but having already read (and loved) Sean's take on Jack Hunter, I can't disagree.

    1. Hey Cryptid. I never been quite able to work up the same amount of rage over Friar, though the photo Sean selected seems designed to illicit just such a response.

You might be right about them trying to deconstruct Cory & Topanga. I saw in a short time span Secret of Life and the stuff from Season 1 that seemed to presage it. Piecing this together with animal husbandry, the use of Our Town in another episode, and dim memory of a class discussion about a book we had to read in Grade 8 or 9, I wondered if Lucas was being put forth as a teen-romance version of Billy Buck, with the equivalent of a dead pony in Riley’s future. But I didn’t at the time think of it with respect to BMW.

    2. Are you guys, like, trying to make a point of some sort by calling him 'Friar' all the time? What's the problem with calling him Lucas? What's his name got to do with anything?

    3. I do believe it helps Cryptid express his utter contempt for the character. I follow suit if I remember to.

    4. Eh, same reason Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy refer to each other by their surnames. They hate each other. I hate Lucas Friar.

Besides, we call Stuart Minkus by his last name more often than not, and I actually like him.

      Delete
    5. We call Stuart Minkus "Minkus" because that's how he's usually referred on the show. Also, why we saw Feeny and Turner and not George and Jonathan. But Lucas is called Lucas.

I don't know, guess you're entitled to do what you want. Just has always seemed strange to me.

      Delete
    6. I kind of agree with Christian. The only person who called Lucas 'Friar' was Charlie.

We also call Stuart 'Minkus' to avoid confusion, however unlikely, with their college professor who was called Stewart.

    8. I'm not sure. He -may- be a deconstruction of Cory and Topanga, and I hope he is; but that will really only pan out if we do get a season 4. (I'm aware that looks unlikely; but that's the only we we can really see it being a full on deconstruction).

You can see though that Friar is due to Crytpid's dislike of the character - thus whilst most people say Smackle, he'll say Isadora; because she has the respect Lucas doesn't. For me, I don't usually do it, because last name or first name means nothing for me due to respect - we say Feeny, and Turner, and in a sense, calling him Friar may be giving the respect we do to these guys. (Not just because they're teachers though - I say Eli; who I recently realised why he looked familiar.)

      Delete
    9. I actually love that you guys keep calling him Friar. It just seems like the best way to show your hatred for him.

      Delete
    10. Will-I'd like to believe that at least they were trying to go somewhere with him. Though what I suspect they were trying to do is so dissonant with the Disney Channel's M.O., as best I understand it, as to require something akin to samizdat to escape Mouseketeerville.

Then again, I don't seem able to distinguish "illicit" from "elicit," so what do I know?

      Delete
    11. Milestones - I would like to believe it; but I'm unconvinced. And we can only go off what we've seen onscreen, and so far, that's not enough.

I do imagine this idea that Riley and Lucas had a big fight; and Riley says something like "my parents often broke up; but always got back together. This is just like them." And refusing to acknowledge all evidence that Lucas has actually moved on.

But I truly believe that based off current evidence, they don't see much beyond the typical Disney Prince. Not someone who deserves Riley; or Maya. In some regards, I don't think he's acknowledged the fact that women are allowed to have their own thoughts now. He comes across like the way male leads were written waaaay back when.

    12. Will - yeah, there isn't much to go on, and probably won't be anything more, barring a Season 4.
