Ava is artificially high because the letters 'a-v-a' appear in that order in not just Ava's name, but also in words like 'aggravating' or 'lava'. As in, "Ava is very aggravating and we should throw her in the lava." But this could be all over the place. For instance, if we ever referred to "America" that's one more reference for Eric.

- Shawn beats Maya and Riley despite only appearing in a fraction of the episodes. Eric is beaten by only 3. Just goes to show you how much we talk about those too. Surprised that Topanga beat them though.
- Katy at only 31, behind people like Amy, Josh, Harley and Chet surprises me. I can't believe how high Harley is in general. He ties Minkus and is almost at Zay levels.

DeleteThat being said, it does seem to highlight a weakness with the show--Riley and Maya are too attached at the hip, and have so few storylines of their own that it's nearly impossible to talk about one without mentioning the other.
Also, how the heck did Harley garner forty-two separate mentions? He was in like six episodes.

DeleteAgreed. I don't understand how they looked at BMW, saw the mainplot/subplot structure, and decided to give Auggie so many subplots. They really should have used "Friends" as a model. Split up Riley and her friends. Break up the kids into different configurations. Give Cory, Topanga and the other adults subplots.
I guess in addition to checking the blog speculatively on each American holiday (up here, we are having a different one today), more frequent and random visits are required to keep up.

ReplyDeleteFeeny having only sixty-three mentions sounds fine at first, but given how often we took issue with Cory being a sub-par teacher, I'm surprised his name didn't come up more often (i.e. Feeny would tell the kids to be quiet and pay attention, Feeny would be ending his lecture and then the kids would go off and do their thing, Feeny got to talk to other grown-ups).
I do find it amusing that Lauren and Charlie both have seventeen separate mentions. That's almost too perfect.

Huh, considering "Cory and Topanga" or how Eric was as a teenager, you'd think there'd be at least one more episode.
Amusingly given the whole Cory and Topanga thing, the two valentines day episodes don't really showcase their romance so much. My Baby Valentine is one of the worst valentine's day episodes I've seen in any show, and is one of the few times I've felt myself actively rooting against them being a couple.

For all Cory and Topanga's talk of how they were this great, epic couple, most of the grand displays on Cory's part tended to go down in flames.
Which I always enjoyed, because I enjoyed seeing Cory's hubris get the better of him.
The stronger romantic scenes, I felt, were the simpler scenes.
When we just saw them together, because they enjoy the other's company, because they liked being "together," then I felt the strength of "Cory and Topanga."
And I do think that was the entire point.
Not disagreeing with you at all. I also felt that for all his later seasons telling of Shawn 'how a relationship should work', one of the few times I feel he's on to something is when he's talking very specifically about Topanga... and that's when he takes Shawn's advice.

ReplyDeleteI think Topanga is high because not only is she referred to as the mother figure, the only character other than Cory to be a regular in GMW that was in BMW, but as the Lucas/Riley thing started getting more and more, there may have been a fair bit of comparison with Riley/Lucas as compared to Cory/Topanga.

As for Girl Meets World and an episode devoted to pranking...um...well, there's always Boy Meets World.
A GMW episode devoted to pranking could have been amazing. I could totally see a prank war getting out of control with shifting loyalties, and people who started off neutral getting drawn into it.

That would indicate it being a back door.
Yeah, I'm with Danielle on this one. I always considered it the back door and that the two backyards butted against each other. Both because A) Who has a side yard and not a backyard? and B) As Cryptid said, if it's not the backyard it means that the front door is also not on the front of the house.

DeleteAdding on to your arguments, while "side yards" exist to a certain degree, that doesn't really seem to be the case in Cory's neighborhood. I never got the impression there was a lot of room in their corner of suburbia. Side yards are more of a larger neighborhood thing.
As for the architecture issue that Will was talking about, semantics aside, I'd argue that urban landscaping in the Northeastern United States is wonky. And has been since this country was founded.
Oddly, now that I stop to think about it, a lot of the "next-door neighbor" characters seem to be connected to the back yard. There was Kimmy Gibbler on "Full House" and Wilson on "Home Improvement."
The door is the back door. He is next door to Feeny. The back door, which leads to the back yard, is adjacent to Feeny's property.

There's the front door, a staircase, some double-doors leading to SOMETHING I DUNNO MAN, a door leading into the kitchen...but also just like a spot where there's no wall (it's not really a hallway, though, because the rooms are right next to each other), and then in the kitchen are more stairs and a door leading outside, but like WHERE OUTSIDE. The Matthews CLEARLY DO have a sideyard, then, because they have those double doors, but we never see anyone out there, do we?

okay update: michael jacobs considered it the side of the house, but a script calls it the backyard, so i guess it's the backyard, but still, i want an aerial view of this layout and the surrounding street. someone drew something out that has the same house layout, but like puts them on a corner lot, which i don't think could be the case given when cory pushes morgan on her stupid car thing and she goes FLYING and they watch her for like thirty seconds. i'm pretty sure there has to be a walkway that connects the backyards of the matthews house with other houses, and if they ARE on a corner lot then the corner would be on the opposite side (the layout was: two streets which on the front door side and then on the fourth wall side [so from our perspective we would be standing in the street if we backed up], but i don't think that's possible).

So I was thinking about "Hogs and Kisses" the other day (I had to look the title up <_<), and it just bugs the hell out of me. I think what bugs me most is less that Cory completely forgot about Lauren (although real talk: if I were dating someone and she was kissed by some random dude she spent a night talking to, it'd bug me, but I think I'd be able to move on from that. If she started straight up making out with my best friend [who I've known almost as long as her] just because some dude with a camera said so, I think I'd be a lot more upset <_<) and more that the show treated Topanga as justified when she broke up with Cory for going on a date with Lauren (EVEN THOUGH HE REPEATEDLY SAID HE NEITHER NEEDED TO NOR WANTED TO), but treats Cory like he's a lunatic for thinking there could be something between Topanga and Shawn.

DeleteAnd Topanga and Shawn have played up their more sensual natures for the cameras before. Remember "Quiz Bowl" where Topanga became "Hair" and Shawn became "Pouty Lips"? I tend to think of it as an extension of that.
As for Lauren--I think the idea is that although Cory did choose Topanga, the fact remains that he had at least mild feelings for Lauren. Shawn and Topanga have never had anything remotely resembling romantic feelings for each other.
I agree. Cory should have been able to understand it was basically acting, like they were in a class play or something similar.
DeleteLate on this but... Cory is one of the most insecure characters I've ever watched who's the 'main' character. The reason I don't mind Topanga's break-up with him due to Lauren is it's really the only time she's shown any sign of insecurity in regards to Cory. She's allowed to have that, given she's having to constantly reassure Cory of her feelings for him. Which starts getting old and tired for me - even more than the Riley/Maya 'what if we're not best friends for ever'?
