Happy Halloween!

It's not lupus.

I'm Dr. Greg House for Halloween. Christian hasn't watched House because he sucks. He probably wouldn't like it anyway because, again, he sucks. My other costume consideration was J.D. from Scrubs. I absolutely love Scrubs, I think everyone alive today (with a Netflix subscription) should watch the first seven seasons of Scrubs. I have watched them many many times. The only series I've honestly considered doing another solo review blog for is Scrubs. Everybody loves the show, but no one really talks about why, outside of "Dr. Cox is awesome." There's so much going on, including my long standing theory that Elliot is the best character on the show, and I have so much to say about every episode of seasons 1 through 7. Season 8 is bad. Season 9 doesn't exist.

But anyway, I also adore House, but it wouldn't be that fun to review. Everyone knows why House is awesome, and its flaws don't require any real analysis to understand. On the other hand, I think I have a lot of interesting things to say about Scrubs.

Anyway, happy Halloweenday everyone. I'd love to see your costumes.

  1. Full disclosure. My first thought was Professor Lupin who had somehow gotten Mad-Eye Moody's walking stick.

That said, if you review Scrubs, I will DEFINITELY watch the show along with you.

  3. At first I thought you were saying you considered J.D. Salinger which sounds awesome. But then I saw it was J.D. from Scrubs. And actually one time we watched an episode of House in a class for some reason now that I think about it. I'm not sure why.

Haven't chosen a costume yet. Last night I just went out in the suit I had to wear for my show that night, tonight I suppose I actually need to go to a costume shop.

IN HONOR OF HALLOWEEN DON'T FORGET TO MARATHON THROUGH "WHO'S AFRAID OF CORY WOLF?" "THE WITCHES OF PENNBROOK" and "GIRL MEETS WORLD OF TERROR"(S)!

Nah, I'm kidding. Just watch "And Then There Was Shawn" and call it a day.

  6. I have Scrubs through even to Season 8 on DVD. I also suffered through the abomination that followed. If this series was going to run itself into the ground, I was going to follow them all the way in.

I didn’t think as highly of House. But I never stopped watching. That might be a case where I was watching a show almost solely for an actor’s performance (same with The Blacklist now, though that is a more extreme example).

I’m going to a friend’s house later to watch a bunch of “seasonal” movies. No costumes will be involved.

    Happy Halloween, everyone.

    1. I saw a couple episodes of House back in high school for my anatomy class. Didn't get the appeal. Sure the CGI recreations were pretty cool, but Dr. House was just a straight-up unpleasant person.

      Delete
    2. The appeal for everyone beyond the core audience really disappeared by Season 3. The core element of the show had been about how House was such an unrepentant asshole...but at the end of the episode, he'd show just enough humanity and repentance to suggest that by the end of the series he'd change into someone who isn't a complete dipwad. Unfortunately as is the way of Flanderization his character degraded into "well he's an asshole because being an asshole is cool."

The last few whole seasons were kind of painful to watch.

      Delete
    3. There was an interesting Reddit thread concerning characters from other shows meeting each other.

Everyone got a chuckle out of the antics Cory and Shawn would have if they met JD and Turk.

But there was actually a rather in-depth debate over what would happen if Dr. House and Dr. Cox met one another. The general consensus was that Cox, having a heart deep, deep down inside, would DESPISE the narcissistic House.

      Delete
    4. House was the most watched show in the world in 2008, when it aired seasons 4 and 5. The original Eurodata post with that data is apparently gone, but you can still find other news sites linking to it. Season 5 has a 77 on metacritic and a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

I agree that the first three seasons are the best, by a lot, but you might be slightly talking out of your ass about the "appeal" disappearing.

      Delete
    5. "The original Eurodata post with that data is apparently gone, but you can still find other news sites linking to it. Season 5 has a 77 on metacritic and a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Hmmm...Is it possible that House had a very niche audience and that it remained popular through its run? Scrubs had a devoted fanbase, yes, but was it perhaps more mainstream?

But then, you said "most watched in the world." That's a bit perplexing. I'd have pegged it to be a reality show, if only for carbon-copy series in various nations being counted together.

      Delete
    6. It definitely wasn't a niche audience. "In 2008, House was distributed in a total of 66 countries. With an audience of over 81.8 million worldwide, it was the most watched television show on the globe and far surpassed the viewership figures of the leading TV dramas the previous two years (CSI and CSI: Miami)"

      Delete
    7. Of course, the fact that CSI and CSI Miami won the previous two years means that this isn't a measure of QUALITY, but my point was just that the audience was massive all the way through season five, contrary to what Unknown said.

      Delete
    8. 81.8 MILLION WORLDWIDE!?!?

HOLY *NICE TRY, STILL NOT GOING TO SWEAR*!!! That's incredible! Really, really incredible!

Hmmm...how many viewers do you think that "Good Looking Detective, Eric Matthews" would get?

      Delete
    9. Five and a half?

Nonsense. There'd be at the least Riley, Auggie, Maya and Farkle (Under the assumption Riley hid the remote from Maya and Farkle owes her a favor) from the new group alone. Add in Mr. Feeny, Rachel and Tommy and we're up to seven viewers.
Oh, and Jack Hunter would watch out of sheer disbelief for at least the pilot. And in spite of himself, he'd continue to watch because Eric is just that magnetic.

      Delete
    10. Cryptid you just nailed that. Well done.

      Delete
    11. "I agree that the first three seasons are the best, by a lot, but you might be slightly talking out of your ass about the "appeal" disappearing."

It was a bit long ago in my defense (the show ended when all the current crop of Disney Channel shows were either brand-spanking new or not even conceived yet) so it probably remained broadly high in quality longer than I can remember. But I still stand by my comment that the last few seasons were painful to watch.

      Delete
    12. It's fine. I'm very defensive about my Housey House.

And yeah, season 8 of House is like season 8 of Scrubs. I watch it, because I have to, but I'd rather not.

      Delete
    13. "And yeah, season 8 of House is like season 8 of Scrubs. I watch it, because I have to, but I'd rather not."

So...like the Topanga-Gives-Up-On-Love-Entirely Arc from Season 7 of Boy Meets World?

      Delete
    14. Oh, and about "Good Looking Detective, Eric Matthews."

We can't forget Jason, Eric's first sidekick. He'd watch. Heck, he'd probably guest star for a voice-over role.
And then there's Lonnie. She'd probably watch. So would Kelly and Ryan, from "Uncle Daddy."

Harley would probably watch after hearing Riley and Farkle talk about it. Frankie Stechino (sic) might watch if there's nothing else on.

Alan and Amy watched Eric as a weatherman, so they'd watch him as a Good Looking Detective. And by extension, Eric's old co-workers at the station would watch too.

And Mr. Turner would for likely the same reasons as Jack, sheer astonishment and then in spite of himself due to Eric's charisma.

Eli Williams would only watch it if "Good Looking Detective, Eric Matthews" is airing on the channel that his news station is an affiliate of.

So altogether, that's probably good for at least thirty or so.

      Delete
    15. I imagine Good Looking detective would be very popular ;)

      Delete
    16. Did Eric ever say anything other than it would star a Good Looking Guy?

Would it be buddy cop in the style of...um...hmmm, there haven't been many pure buddy cop shows in a long time...21 Jump Street? (That was a show back in the '80s, right?)
Or a crime/court procedure drama like Law & Order?
A group of cops like Rookie Blue?
A family drama like Blue Bloods? (Very underrated, highly recommended. God bless Tom Selleck).
Or was it just supposed to be Eric, the Good Looking Detective Who Works Alone?

I think it would do well, especially if Eric teamed up with whomever Good Looking Detective is, for a buddy cop show. I'd say, hmm...ten seasons, ending when Eric is promoted to Captain.

      Delete
    17. Personally I see Eric Matthews, Good Looking Detective as sort of an Inspector Gadget type. He wouldn't be able to solve any crime without help from his younger brother Josh and their robot Farkle.

Eric would have a hard time finding his way out of a phone booth without assistance.

      Delete
    18. And then what, 1960? Robot-Farkle wants to become a real boy after falling in love with Good Looking Detective's niche, Riley? Riley would actually fit better as the "Penny" if Good Looking Detective is Inspector Gadget.

That's not as far-fetched as it sounds. actually. While I meant it as a joke, I do remember reading a short story in high school about a supercomputer that falls in love with one of his technicians after helping a second technician write a love poem for her. If I recall, it was called "E.P.I.C.A.C."

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EPICAC_%28short_story%29
The Wikipedia article doesn't do it justice. It was downright tragic.

Oh, and did you hear about the reboot of Inspector Gadget? I think it's on Netflix in the United States.

    20. I always pictured "Good Looking Detective" as a throwback to the old private eye shows, where they often worked alone. I could also see it as a "Remington Steele" type of show, if he had a female partner who was smarter.

      Delete
    21. I'm with Kit, the good looking detective doesn't want a partner.

      Delete
    22. But that's the point! Good Looking Detective doesn't want a partner. He's still grieving the loss of his old mentor, Senior Detective Awesome Deep Voice and doesn't want anybody to get close to him anymore.

For the last seven years Good Looking Detective has worked alone, refusing to get help from anybody unless he absolutely needs it. Most of his help comes in the way of various professionals whose services are needed to analyze evidence or court officials who authorize warrants. Good Looking Detective may be a self-induced lone wolf, but he isn't about to flaunt the laws he is sworn to uphold.

And then one day, his Captain, a short man named Handlebar Mustache, assigns him a partner. As it happens, on his last assignment with Detective Awesome Deep Voice, Good Looking Detective saved the life of a young woman. Her college-aged brother vowed to join the force and is now Junior Detective Great Hair.

Good Looking Detective must learn to trust again as he works with Junior Detective Great Hair to keep the city safe. And Good Looking.

Whaddya say, we pitch this to ABC? Wolf's got NBC locked up tight and CBS has Criminal Minds and NCIS.
