Totally real set pictures from "Girl Meets Rangers"

  1. Not going to lie, it wouldn't surprise me to learn that Stuart Minkus has spent the last fifteen years either developing real ranger powers or a functional Iron Man-expy suit.

  3. Lol, nice!

Speaking of Charlie, any of you guys know what episode he's going to be in? Writers said he'll be in an October episode, so I guess one of the Texas ones?

    1. He's supposedly plays some role in Texas (I can't imagine he actually goes to Texas, so I could see him being in maybe Texas 1 before they leave or Texas 3 when they get back or both)

He's also supposedly in Graduation. There may be more.

  5. I guess I'll say it. Why's Zay gotta be the Black Ranger though? Jking of course.

    1. He actually fits very well personality-wise. Zack was the laid-back jokester one.

    2. Zach was my hero growing up, when there were very few black superheroes to look up to. It actually hurt when he got replaced in Season 2. If that remake movie ever gets made, then controversy be damned, I'd still want him to be played by a black actor. As a fan, it's just to big a part of what I associate with the character. I don't want to see some white kid from the Maze Runner movies doing hip hop akido

    3. It looks like that remake movie definitely will be made. I'm not sure if the characters will be Jason/Kimberly/Zack/Billy/Trini/Tommy or if they'll go with all new characters, but I'm guess it'll be the former and I'm sure they'll make Zack black.

Zack was always my favorite Ranger too.

    4. I was too young to watch MMPR the first time round, and by the time it aired in syndication, I found it hokey-er (sic) than other seasons--I didn't start watching until Dino Thunder was airing. Zack was always fun though.

I think the reboot is actually meant to be a full re-boot.

Oh, and would Auggie be Alpha in "Girl Meets Rangers"?

    5. Trini was my hero growing up. There were very few Asian superheroes on comics, or on T.V. Being able to see one kick ass every day on screen was awesome. Thuy Trang will always be one of my biggest heroes for that reason.

and I agree that Zay does fit Zack's personality.

Here's to hoping the remake is good.

    6. Zordon was my hero because I always wanted to be a head floating in a big jar.

    7. I've watched a ton of Power Rangers. Favorite Ranger? Probably Wes Collins or Carter Grayson...though I'll probably think of somebody else later tonight. Favorite Mentor? Honestly, R.J. from "Jungle Fury."

      Delete
    8. Wes is the fucking MAN! Him and Eric both. Time Force is my favorite, though I haven't seen anything after wild force-ish.

      Delete
    9. Loved Time Force--it's my favorite not-Disney, not-Zordon-era season.

What was nice about Wes is the degree to which he chose to be a hero. A lot of the time, there's a sense of destiny in the Power Rangers mythos. While that's not inherently a bad thing, it does elevate Wes, Carter and Eric. Wes and Eric chose to be heroes. Same thing with Lightspeed and SPD. They made a deliberate choice and stuck with it. Most others were either DNA-joined into it, or were trained with the explicit intent of becoming heroes.
The way I see it, Wes, Carter and Eric are essentially Steve Rogers, for want of a better comparison. They chose to better themselves. Most of the other rangers are...well, Superman doesn't really fit, but I'm not that well-versed on destiny-based heroes. I like free will; it humanizes the heroes dramatically.

Stopped after Wild Force eh? I'd recommend Dino Thunder, SPD, and Jungle Fury simply because they are very good seasons. Never saw RPM, but I'd recommend it too.

Don't know if it's proper to recommend another guy's work here, so I won't post a link, but Linkara did cover all this in History of Power Rangers on Channel Awesome.

    10. Haha, this must be an age thing. I don't know anything about non-original Power Rangers. Beyond that the voice of Vash the Stampede played one.

      Delete
    11. Yeah Johnny Yong Bosch was the replacement black ranger for some reason. He's one of the best english voice actors these days, lots of big roles.

      Delete
    12. And I like your assessment, Cryptid. Destiny is a cheap and easy device. Wes, on the other hand, had to rise to the occasion, and Eric had to FIGHT his destiny more than anything. I don't think I've ever met someone before who understood the nuances of Power Rangers Time Force. Hi five.

      Delete
    13. "Hi five"
Hmmm, I wasn't aware we could actually say hello to Latin numerals.
      *Slaps Sean's hand*

In response to Christian's comment about age, Shipping Wars and I saw a lot of Power Rangers Generations when we were kids. And then Linkara's analysis in his "History of Power Rangers" specials sucked us back into the lore.

Free will is at the core of Time Force. Wes was needed to unlock the powers due to DNA-security measures, but other than that, he could have walked away at any time.
And Eric, badly paraphrased, was "dirt poor, and struggled every day just to make it." What is it with awesome characters named Eric having to rise to the occasion?

I agree that destiny is rather cheap if not used carefully. Why does it have to be these people? Now, in fairness, strictly speaking, there's only a handful of instances when true prophecy and destiny come up in Power Rangers.
Lost Galaxy has Arthurian lore with the Quasar Sabers so I can forgive the destiny aspects. Dino Thunder having the semi-sentient Dino Gems is not quite what I'd call destiny. That's closer to DNA-joined. Now Ninja Storm reveals that the three main rangers were apparently destined to face Lothor, but this doesn't happen until the finale, so it's not so bad--we followed these guys for a season, so we want to see them fight.
Really, now that I stop to think of it, the only really destiny-heavy seasons were Mystic Force and Samurai. And boy howdy, did they not handle that well.

The nature of destiny vs. free will is one of the reasons I'm fond of Captain America. Steve Rogers wanted to be a hero, even though he was not physically capable of it. He was willing to put his life on the line and the MCU did a very good job with it.

Another thing I noticed is that Power Rangers, like most superhero shows, has an inherent weakness in its set-up. We know the heroes will win in the end, so it can become difficult to be invested. I noticed the same thing in "Legend of Korra." The fights with Vaatu--which is more or less the Devil--and the three-hundred-foot-tall Colossus were not engaging. The stakes were too big, the Big Bads too big and too bad. If you raise the stakes too high, then I believe there cease to be stakes.

*Hands mic politely to the Reviewers*

    14. Oh, one more thing. If you loved "Time Force," I reckon you'd enjoy "Jungle Fury." There are themes of self-discovery, perseverance, redemption, and free will, plus the best fight scenes in any recent Ranger series. Lots and lots of martial arts.

    15. OMG you're a Trigun fan Christian?

  6. I wonder what Linkara would say if he had to review this for History of Power Rangers?

  7. I do know not many of the original rangers have much to do with the franchise anymore. Trini died in 2001 in a car crash, Billy was gay and felt people on the show discriminated against him and Zach has boycotted several of the conventions because of how Billy was treated. What did yall think of the Power Rangers short film that got some publicity several months ago?

    1. One of the early Pink Rangers--Cassie, I think, from Turbo and Space--returned for Megaforce. And Adam was back for Operation Overdrive. Jason came back for Wild Force. Tommy Oliver is the face of the franchise, coming back for Dino Thunder and a cameo in Megaforce.

Question, why do we refer to the Rangers by their character names?

      Delete
    2. I would guess because its the forum we know them the best in. Weird comparison but when you talk about your Mother or Father you probably don't often refer to them by their actual name. In my life I call them mom or dad 99.99% of the time because that is the prism I generally see them through. I don't see them often through the prism of being just another adult in the world with similar issues that I face. To me its just a matter of how we perceive those around us. 99% of what I know about these people are through their characters on the show thats why I use their character names.I think generally we default to whatever the biggest social role that person has had in our life.

  8. I don't know how many of you saw it, but that reboot/re-imagining of the MMPR feature film cast its new Pink Ranger last week, and the new Pink Ranger is Naomi Scott. For any of you who've been watching DC for any length of time will recognize her from the DCOM "Lemonade Mouth". More recently, however, she had a part in the current #1 movie at the box office "The Martian". I wish her luck, cause she'll need it. I will say its interesting they introduced her as the Pink Ranger, but not under any character name.

Man, this was my show when I was little. I went as the Red Ranger for Halloween, and I remember being in love with Kimberly. Stopped really paying attention after the 4th or 5th incarnation, but I can't rightly remember which. I hope this movie they're doing doesn't make it so campy its unwatchable. They need a new spin on it, and I hope it works.

    1. Think they'll go for campy or a more serious tone? Serious seasons were usually better.

      Delete
    2. In my opinion, they have to go serious. That doesn't mean they can't have humor in it, or poke some fun at themselves. But it can't be all putties and Japanese overacted martial arts scenes. I believe they have to ground the movie a bit, in order to draw in a bigger audience outside of nostalgic fanboys/girls and little kids.

    3. If "Pacific Rim," where people pilot giant robots to fight Cthulhus, can deliver a good movie--which I haven't actually seen yet, but I've heard mostly good things about--then Power Rangers shouldn't have too hard a time, all things considered.
They're rebooting the series entirely right? So that means no Zordon selecting "Teenagers with attitude"?
I think the key is in the Rangers. Most villains are just out to rule the earth--sometimes this is done well, sometimes it isn't, but for the most part, the villains have the same goals. I doubt we'll get Noble Demons like Ecilptor (In Space) or men cursed like Dai-shi (Jungle Fury), which is a shame but they were simply in very good seasons.
The Rangers have to be people not just people who the audience will root for, but actually aspire to be like.
We're back into Steve Rogers territory, I suppose. His noble heart set him apart. And it was really Steve Rogers, not Captain America, who spoke on the intercom to the loyal S.H.I.E.L.D agents in "Winter Soldier."
The Rangers need to be people who would be heroes even if they didn't have their powers, if given the opportunity to help. It can't just be a bunch of goody-goodies.

      Delete
    4. My biggest concern is, however, that they'll make this typical teen drama fodder.

      Delete
    5. What do you mean by "typical teen drama fodder"? Like what they did to the Hunger Games with an overemphasis on romance?

It's not that I disagree with you, but all things considered, I'm not sure we have to worry about that.
Surprisingly, given the cast being teenagers or young adults, the Power Rangers are usually pretty chaste. Typical teen drama fodder is rarely part of the game.

Sure there was Tommy/Kimberly and then Tommy/Kat, and eventually Andros/Ashley in the first incarnations but after that I don't think any rangers pursued a romantic relationship with one another until....*scratches head*...was it Time Force?
And then there was Ninja Storm, kind of. And Mystic Force in the loosest sense of the word. I think that might be it.

So while your concern is valid, I'd say history is on our side.

      Delete
    6. Yeah, kinda like that. I know a couple of the producers worked on the Hunger Games, and there's going to be a want to pull in that direction. And while I agree that history says that won't happen, the execs and producers are not beholden to PR history. In fact, they'll most likely try to run from it a bit.

      I'm a Hufflepuff; I don't think I'm actually allowed to swear.

    10. Take it from me, Christian, he didn't start swearing regularly until about a month ago. We're in our early 20s.

And the reason why I don't swear here is because it seems a little forced. However, depending on how this weekend goes, I may have to change my mind.

  9. So I finally just went and checked out the GMW message board on IMBD that gets mentioned in the comments here occasionally and...WOW. It was kind of terrifying. From what I saw, there is a huge, HUGE difference in the quality of discussion there and on this blog. Also, I can't think of a time on this blog when anyone has really been disrespectful to others about their opinions. So thanks Christian and Sean for providing us with this place to come and read your reviews and talk with each other. I appreciate it. That's all I have to say since I know hardly anything about the Power Rangers.

    2. I have no idea what Sean's going for, but Power Rangers is basically the last remaining vessel of campy superhero entertainment, and it often isn't as campy as its reputation deserves.
A group of teenagers is given high-tech equipment by a benevolent alien to fight an evil alien's monsters.

    4. I got what Sean was going for. It was funny.

I was working my way through the Batman series set, probably the origin of campy superhero TV, same time I was starting to dig into BMW (basically reliving my childhood as I was living yours). So I can understand the appeal of that sort of stuff.

  12. Question for Christian and Sean - will we be getting 3 individual reviews for "Texas" or a Monday Mega-Review of the entire thing? I'm sure there are things to be said for doing it both ways, but it would be nice to know ahead of time if I need to watch and prepare as they air or if I can view them together at my convenience to prepare any comments. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. We actually haven't talked about it, but I expect 3 individual reviews.

      Delete
    2. Certainly, I never considered the contrary.

It's actually a small pet peeve of mine when people rate and consider double episodes all as one thing, because often different parts of an episode are of markedly different quality. For instance, sometimes A Long Walk to Pittsburgh gets a bad rep, but *Part 1* is actually excellent, it's just that the ball is dropped by the resolution. And there's lots of other examples from non-BMW shows.

So, yeah, I think it important to judge them all separately.

      Delete
    3. On another note (and this is me telling Sean this for the first time too) I'm actually incredibly busy this weekend, so that may hurt the timeliness of these reviews on my end. I should be fine for Friday's episode, but Saturday's and Sunday's may take a hit. It's possible you'll be getting Sean's thoughts on everything and then my thoughts on everything later.

      Delete
    4. I agree with Christian's point about multi-parters needing to be judged separately.

  13. They took a cast and crew picture at the end of filming "Meets Graduation". Smackle and Charlie were in it, pretty much confirming their being in that episode, but all those other folks that were listed in the credits on the Wiki were not. I guess that doesn't preclude them from being in it and leaving before the photo, but it makes it more unlikely. While I understand most of those missing, I was surprised by no Katy. Seems like she should at least be in that episode.

Speaking of Cheryl and totally OT, she is starting a web series on November 1 - Confessions of a Bartender. You can find the trailer here - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCg7N7EHJY1RPHWxsvLhwHOg - Cheryl's YouTube channel.
