Episode Review: "Girl Meets Ski Lodge (Part 1)" (#3.08)

WARNING: There really shouldn't be a need to say this, we all just want to have fun here, but do not post fucking spoilers in the comments. For fuck's sake, people. If you need to talk that badly about Girl Meets World, add each other on Skype, or go to a message board, or make a Discord channel, it doesn't matter. Don't post spoilers here. And don't waste a comment apologizing for doing it, just don't do it.

---------------------------------

This episode is daunting. I've seen people who consistently forgive the sins of this show describe their displeasure with it. Will I survive? Will Christian survive? Will I have to see another terror attack on the news tomorrow?

The answer to at least one of those questions is yes.

If memory serves, Christian and I had a conversation as soon as the title "Meets Ski Lodge" was teased. We thought, "There's just no way." We believed, "It can't be the same lodge." But it is. Who cares, though, since Cory used the word "waif."
Farkle and Smackle are endearing, but we'll see how long it takes for "We're smarter than you, but together" to get annoying.

I love Cory in this scene though, Ben's delivery is hilarious, the pointer breaking was unexpected, and I definitely appreciate "We had our plans, we had our blueprints..." because... they actually did.
This episode was written by Teresa Kale, who had no hand in Boy Meets World, so it's anyone's guess who had the idea to throw in that line. Probably Ben. But Rider and his brother directed this episode, so who knows.

Cory Cory Cory Cory Cory, slow down brother, slow down chief! CLEARLY, Cory does not read the writers' twitter! Otherwise! He would know! That it's not a triangle. God I'm sick of making that joke, but what am I supposed to do! The writers can't say something so stupid like that and expect me not to hound them about it.

They've done a respectable job recreating the set, which is cool. Apparently Riley fell off the bus, which is a callback to Cory falling off the bus, but not the fun kind of callback. It's the annoying kind. The trying too hard kind.
It's truly, truly unfortunate that the original ski lodge had that bay window, because now we have to hear about it. The script manages to catch me off guard a second time when Farkle adds "Maya Riley Lucas enough already" to the list of events, that gave me a good laugh. Seriously though he's right. Fucking enough. First Texas was the end, then Graduation, then Triangle, then True Maya, now fuckin what. Just tell me what, Girl Meets World, tell me what the next carrot is you're gonna dangle in front of your gullible audience.

What the fuck is this? Why are we still talking about the triangle? Michael Jacobs, I know you're better than this. I appreciate that you tried your best. You have my love and appreciation for bringing me Shawn and Eric a few more times in my life, I owe you for that. Thank you. But you've lost this war. You have lost to Disney Channel. I know this isn't your show, this isn't your vision. I'm sorry that you have to attach your name to this. Lucas even asks how to resolve it, LIKE WE DIDN'T WASTE AN EPISODE ON HIM REACHING A DECISION. He chose! Just tell them! Oh my god!
Arite, they confront Lucas about his decision, and they call him a coward. Lucas Friar is not a coward. The writers are cowards. Disney Channel execs are cowards.

We get the second instance today of Lucas being like "I don't like this about you Maya," so I feel like some seeds are being planted, but I genuinely hope it's a reversal switcheroo and he ends up choosing Maya anyway.

"We should imagine what our lives would be like together." I have a question. Where are Alan and Amy Matthews? Either one of them would put this shit in the dirt. Long Walk to Pittsburgh for Amy, A Kiss is More Than A Kiss for Alan. And look, I get it, teenagers take this stuff way too seriously, we all did it. But the parents are supposed to be a foil here. That's what set Boy Meets World apart, was wise, competent adults. All the adults did in Meets Triangle was "OMG I wonder who he picks!!"

Oh this cannot be happening. A G-rated James Bond opening to advance Sabrina's singing career. Nice water gun, Lucas. I was already exhausted at the end of the song, but that's not actually the end. The only redeemable moment of this spy movie fantasy is Riley having her hair moussed backward. It looked cool and made me think she might be capable of portraying more emotions than the two Riley knows how to feel.
Hey there.

Oh it's still not over. This second part has a redeeming moment as well, the first time in a while that Maya making fun of Lucas actually felt natural, when she's mocking his accent. If Lucas doesn't love that, he's a complete tool.

Riley's fantasy future is a parody of overly dramatic romance movies, which is refreshing. I was afraid they would try to be sincere. Zay is in the background but we can't see who he's sitting with. Oh gobstoppers, it's Sarah. Probably the most interesting thing going on here, but we have to move on. Josh and Maya arrive as doctors to diagnose Riley with Gooey Sap Disease. I actually think it's hilarious, but it doesn't really help the story.

From Maya, back in real life, "We care about each other too much to let anything like that happen." Is that a FUCKING FACT, Maya? Is that a fact?! Then WHY did you make me watch it?! I'd love to make jokes about Yogi or Zay or something but I'm just fed up. I'm sick to death of having my time wasted by this show. Oh look, it's the male Lauren, and they steal the "ambient light" conversation too, go fuck yourself, Girl Meets World.

This is like the last Hunger Games, or Twilight, there's just no earthly reason for it to be a two parter, but HARRY POTTER did it so now EVERYBODY'S GOTTA DO IT. Two parter for... fuckin... two parts for Bunk'd, where they bunk in one episode and then... don't bunk in the other. I quit.

(Seriously though why do Rider and Shiloh always have to direct the purest shit episodes?)

I also like the Cory business. I also didn't like Riley hurting her leg falling off the bus, especially since they really half-assed it. Cory realistically hobbled around and was in pain, people were a little concerned. Riley doesn't have a bandage, she barely limps, people aren't asking how she's doing, it's just an excuse to sit down in the window.

Man, I thought Josh didn't look any older than the rest of them before. To my eyes he now looks the same age as Farkle, and much younger than Lucas. It's very weird that he's a Freshman in college and they're Freshman in high school. While some of it is obviously Peyton Meyer, who will be turning 18 in a few months, being too old for Lucas, I actually do think Uriah Shelton is a rare instance of a teen character looking too young for his role. Josh is supposed to be 19, and Uriah actually is, but he looks more like 16/17.

On a serious note, I know Uriah went through a pretty horrific accident which kept us from seeing Josh for this long, so I'm glad he seems to be doing better.

Um. You know what Smackle? Just break up with Farkle. You're obviously into every single other guy. Somewhere it's shifted between Smackle resenting Lucas "flirting with her" when she likes Farkle, to her wanting to jump his bones, and now Josh's bones. I'm not into Farkle or Smackle as a couple. Frankly I don't need either of those characters at all. It's been three years, but I just can't get behind Farkle. I feel like I care more about Lucas and Zay than him now.

I can't even with the triangle, and you kind of covered everything, and I'm probably going to be writing the Ski Lodge 2 review today since I'll be out of town next weekend, so I'm going to save my energy. It's exhausting though, and statements Riley's making about this time being DIFFERENT and NOW they're going to settle it feel like total bullshit. Even if it turns out to be true, which I have no faith in, it's bullshit that they had to assure us in the episode "No, seriously guys, this time we're settling it." He picks Riley. We know he picks Riley. At this point he's not even portrayed as into Maya anymore. It's Riley. Just do it. And the degree to which they have no shame about everyone talking about their business and watching their private moments. God, I hate these people.

The only resolution that would satisfy me is them all just realizing they should be friends. And I think I'd enjoy this show more if the three of them were all just meeting new people and dating new people and talking to each other about them, and girlfriends and boyfriends would come and go. They need a BMW Season 2 period.

Okay, nope. Nope at all with Huckleberry Bond. God. It's not like I can pretend BMW didn't ever do this kind of thing, but it never felt this lame. And maybe it was just a different time, where it felt like that was stuff you did and now it doesn't feel like it's something you do.

"Haha, there's Auggie as Cupid because we had to get him in." was a great line, but undercut by them using him in the Bond fantasy.

Oh, I guess Riley is wearing a boot thing. I didn't even see that until like the last minute. Still, they're not skiing, I don't believe she can't... walk around outside a bit. Maybe not hike up any treacherous paths, but she could get some nature in her.

I swear to God, if that's Lauren's son...

Episode Rating: C-
Episode MVP: Ben Savage (his parts were the only good parts, though shoutout to Amir, since Zay was fun too, when he spoke those... 4 times he did)

I'm not enjoying Smackle either. It's like they just had a character summary passed to this writer that says "she's bad at social boundaries and niceties." But instead of sticking with her Asperger's they went to an equal but opposite extreme, where she's OVERLY forward. Idk. The girl in this episode does not have Asperger's.

And you're right, Zay is way better than Farkle right now. Farkle is just... nobody. They tried ONE TIME to make him relatable in Meets Money and it didn't work.

Spot on as usual Sean. I fucking hate this episode. I hate the build up and I hate how we got nothing. I have nothing to add other than the male Lauren needs a haircut.

I'd also like a Farkle/Zay buddy episode. Everyone else is pissing me off.

    1. I would love a Farkle/Zay buddy episode, especially one that's paired with a Maya and Isadora subplot.

  2. I certainly agree with Sean that the fantasy sequences were rather pointless. Like he said there wasn't a foil to them.

Which is a shame, because had there actually been someone to be a foil, I think I could tolerate this episode. So to speak, it's not really the what, it's the how.

Don't get me wrong, the fantasies are pretty bad, but a dream sequence is a dream sequence, so I tend to be forgiving of those, in themselves.

If Riley and Maya told their little fantasies separately, to individual people rather than the Nature Club, we're actually in an alright spot.

Imagine if Isadora offers to keep Riley company, and Topanga has to keep an eye on them, because chaperone rules. Riley tells her little Nicholas Sparks fantasy and Isadora, and more importantly Topanga, get her to confront the naivety of this idea.

Farkle, believing he hasn't been very fair to Maya in the last few weeks, asks to talk as well. Cue Maya's little G-rated Bond story.

The point is that both girls need to confront their own feelings, and the practical application therein. And they didn't...at least, not as much as they should have.

There's not much else to say here. This episode was mostly a waste. And how the hell did they get away with those Yogi jokes?

    1. "Tolerate" is a good word, Cryptid. I suppose I did tolerate this one, but it took all the goodwill/perceptual bias I could muster.

I had to google Nicholas Sparks.

Yeah, the bit with Yogi blocked from following Darby to her room was a funny, but not especially Disney, moment.

    3. Cryptid, I always go in trying to like an episode, but sometimes they make that very hard.

    4. Cryptid456-I wasn't getting Nicholas Sparks from Riley's fantasy. Based on the way she tilted her head in bed, I thought they were going for "Love Story."

  3. I took Lucas' thing about not liking when they tangle about when they actually legit fight? Because he said in Triangle he likes when she makes fun of him. Or maybe the writers forgot what they wrote already.

    3. Huh. Fair enough. I probably tuned out the second time then. Either because I was bored by then, or because danger makes semi-sense given what we know of Lucas, but the fighting thing is a bit inconsistent.

  5. Whilst I do agree the episode was... well bad, what I did actually like was that the BMW references were simply references; not clips. Except in a rare few instances, I think the clips take away from the show; and I just think there've been some clips this year which were just pointless.

By simply making them references, it's something you can smirk at if you saw/remember, but if you haven't, it doesn't really lose anything.

Though the act itself of falling off the bus wasn't great; I did enjoy Cory's reaction to it, and Topanga's expression.

  6. Not gonna lie, my favorite part of this episode was probably the Huckleberry Bond intro...maybe because I have a huge crush on Sabrina and that dress was bombin', but I have such a soft spot for her voice too. The girl's really got pipes! But that overall intro sequence to her fantasy was really well-done. I really wish she had more opportunities to sing on the show without it feeling too forced (the only other time was...Girl Meets Creativity, I think? And that was only for a few seconds)

That aside, very filler episode. Was just more unresolved triangle bullshit.

  7. I wanted to break my TV when Lucas tells the girls that it's not his decision to make; it's all of theres. No, it's not! One boy, two girls. The boy gets to make the choice. It's that simple. It's insanity that he hasn't just told them who he wants to date.

I wonder if the writers will get rid of Lucas. If Maya ends up with Josh, and Riley ends up with Boy-Lauren, then Lucas will be useless. The show can't handle the two new couples, plus Farkle, Smackle, Lucas, and Zay. Too many characters.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I highly doubt Riley will end up with Boy-Lauren. Much as the original Lauren, he's not there to really be a long-term love interest.

It just pisses me off he's even there. It was just a reference too many. Right down to hot chocolates after everyone else has gone to bed.

    1. That's a good point about Boy-Lauren. That's likely. He's probably just there to make Lucas jealous.

    1. Jet-I agree. This should have been a single episode. I know they have a certain number of episodes they have to write, but on this blog, we've come up with stuff that's way better. They should have done something else instead of dragging a single episode out to make it a two parter.

    2. Is it Executive Meddling? Because this definitely feels like a long-winded ploy to get more tweenaged girls to watch this show for longer because you can definitely see the ship wars at large in that demographic on Twitter.

It definitely does not need to be a two-parter narrative-wise, but business-wise...?

  10. I expected more from this episode (though I've been wandering the supremely spoilery and obnoxiously condescending owldetective tumblr which suggested I should expect MAJOR THINGS from this episode), but one thing I DID like quite a lot - again, led to notice by the aforementioned condescending tumblr - was that Lucas was wearing a hoodie with a purple cat on it all episode. Makes me curious to watch for those tidbits, though it does irk me that a half hour disney sitcom is trying SO HARD to weave in all these intricacies and key costuming choices and specifically worded dialogue and background set pieces as CLUES.... instead of just writing a well plotted show.

The sad thing about the episode were two things: one, the good scenes came too few in, and two, the episode as a whole was pointless filler that would have better been accomplished if the time was utilized better & meshed into a one-hot special than two separate episodes.

The good parts (in my opinion):
    • I absolutely loved about the episode was Cory's beginning bit of, "Nature." BAM. It just seems so neurotic and natural and BMW-like, even though the only rerun episodes I've seen are the last couple of seasons when the gang's in college. I really need to stop binge watching AtLA & LoK.
    • "Lauren did not age well, I'm just saying..." A bit of a hilarious part from Topanga, especially since Lauren messed the crap around of the Corpanga relationship.
    • I didn't mind the Isadora x Farkle (it kind of did drag on a bit) banter & the Zay x Farkle argument. We need more mixed pair interactions, especially with Friar's two best guy friends, so to speak. Imagining a scene where the three guys are playing sports: one incompetent, the other okay & the third making the other two feel inferior & give up would be hilarious.
    • Yoby-- dragged on a bit, but it was okay.

Here's my main problem with this episode: unlike Jexica and Permanent Record, this felt so forced, so unrealistic, as usual, & rather than allowing build it is wastes half of its potential on fantasies. I feel as if Riley's is in control, in the sense that she demands that the triangle has to end. NOW. It's like during the one episode with Farkle's room (it's 11:45 at night, I can't recall the name) where Riley's screaming, "DIE ZOMBIES, DIE!!!" It's true-- this shouldn't drag on any longer.

Examples of wasted build-up and potential:
    • Everyone could have been on the hike. Maya does something reckless, Lucas scolds at her, the two have their moment, Riley gets annoyed, then slowly revealing that the triangle is getting to be a problem and that finally it should die. Just let it start off light, like "Mortimer Twigglebottom Smythe."
    • This new guy could have been better introduced at the beginning of the episode as helping out with the NY group. Riley and him hit it off. If we to retain the part that Riley hurt her ankle (as she wore a cast the entire time), let the new guy talk to her and let her bond. Then let Lucas slowly grows jealous and then finally blows when he finds out the two stayed up all night talking.
    • The dream sequences could still be inside the episode, just not as greatly emphasized more and would have been discussed among the Core Six rather than the watchers of the movie "Huckleberries Clutterbuckets, & Unicorns."

More to continue below. Stupid word count limit.

Does it both anyone else that they keep bringing up that the only conversation Lucas and Riley had was being a vet, even in the dream sequences?

This would have served better as a one-hour special-- I wonder why the writers didn't go that route. Did BMW strictly have thirty-minute episodes? Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. A lot of the other Disney shows have had hour-long specials had the plot call for it. If Ski Lodge was an hour long, the pace could have been better, plot lines could be less choppy, and maybe we could find out why Riley doesn't mind this new guy, allowing him to develop a (gasp!) personality, something which our protagonist barely lacks other than one, having a love of all things bright, sunshiny, & happy; two, having an affinity for purple cats; and three, involving herself in all of her friends problems. Don't be such a busybody, peaches.

Another thing: there were brief moments with Riley and Topanga. Exceptionally brief, but they were there. The writers sure missed a huge opportunity for a mother-daughter moment to discuss deal with this. Yes, GMW writers. In real life, parents don't meddle with their kids' affairs often but kids sometimes go to them for advice, or get the advice thrown at them. I wish the writers would have gone this path a bit more. Topanga imparting some wisdom on Riley. This really hasn't happened in awhile.

Third thing: Josh's presence should have been justified rather than just saying, "Heya, I'm volunteering." Does anyone have a probable explanation that could maybe justify this? I live on the West Coast & don't understand East Coast's fall customs.

Fourth: Auggie should have been scraped this episode. Just let them say he's being babysat by Doy's folks or Katy (but the second may not go well. Probably Shawn would be better, but it's a long stretch).

UGH WRITERS CAN YOU NOT DO THE SIMPLISTIC FORMAT. "We need to fix this problem guys. It's *insert less here.* And *lesson wants us to do this this episode (while ultimately forgetting about it).*"

Lastly: Smackle, don't hit on other guys. That's just plain rude, sister.

I may add more tomorrow. Erm, later today. There's an impending question on my mind that's too early to ask this far in the season & to late to even say. It's midnight.

    2. Nobody gets hour-long episodes on Disney. Every episode is strictly 21+ minutes and I guess it's Disney who decides if they want to air 2 parts together (I have a feeling MJ pushes for 2 parters to air separately though).

    3. AirbendingBookworm123- I don't know if you're new here, because the name does't look familiar. Welcome!
"We need more mixed pair interactions, especially with Friar's two best guy friends, so to speak. Imagining a scene where the three guys are playing sports: one incompetent, the other okay & the third making the other two feel inferior & give up would be hilarious."

I love it. This would be fantastic. I could see them give up on sports, and then play video games, which would change the dynamic. Farkle would be amazing, Zay would be okay, and Lucas would be incompetent. What would make the episode even better is if Riley, Maya, and Isadora were off having an adventure on their own. The one rule, they can't talk about boys.

I'm okay with Auggie popping in the dream stupid dream sequences. I object to the amount of screen time/subplots Auggie gets in regular episodes.

    5. I agree that "Lauren did not age well" line was nice. It also makes me think, for the first time, that maybe it's Topanga that has put the ban on skiing. I always thought it was Cory due to his insane paranoia about Topanga that he gets sometimes. It makes me thing she has a slight jealous streak, just well-hidden. And that forgive Cory she could; but that's different from forgiving Lauren, or saying the whole thing was okay.

      Delete
    6. A lingering hatred of Lauren does not a total ban on skiing make--considering all the potential resorts and lodges in the Northeast.

Even if it was Topanga's idea--and dialogue in "Pluto" indicates that it is indeed Cory's--it's probably more to do with Cory and Riley being Klutz and Klutz Jr.

These two can't even get off the bus without getting hurt--in what world does skiing sound like anything other than a trip to the emergency room?

Jet-- I actually meant as airing two parts together. Sorry about the confusion. I do agree that Disney is the boss calling out the air order, premiering all three episodes throughout one whole weekend, as well as promoting the event better (Disney distinctively made their promos with a stylized "Girl Meets Texas" logo all cowboy-ed up, if memory serves correct). I would like to hear your take as to why MJ wants two-parters to be separate, though (nor even write a two-parter on Ski Lodge, which did feel dragged on); being someone who wasn't even born when TGIF was a thing nor hasn't watched the entirety of BMW, it'd be nice to get a fresh take on that perspective.

Kit-- I've actually been on here for awhile, but I'm more of a watcher than a commenter. It's really awkward commenting surrounded by adults, anyway.

I agree that the girls should also have an adventure on their own, as well, although this is a lot harder since Riley's interest bag is really shallow. If they brought up cheerleading again, then Riley keeps falling to the ground, Maya would try to save Riley and/or be burning the pompous, and Smackle would be doing the moves in a robotic way. Or maybe the girls could help out bake at Topanga's and it turns out to be an ultimate disaster.

Hopefully the writers could integrate something like this sometime in the near future, if they haven't finished writing the episodes or they do renew for season four, because the audience does well need it. The only way I see the boys and girls hanging out separately and not speaking of each other is if one side dictated what the whole group was doing, finally splintering off (for the episode, saying), "We can have fun without you. For a day. Maybe."

It is kind of obvious why they having Auggie pop up with Topanga (they need screen time, and maybe because they don't want the disappearing Morgan-incident to happen), but I wish they could integrate Auggie dealing through his troubles & Riley actually giving him some advice or just popping up, arguing or having a good time, because sibling moments are well-needed and are lacking.

Cryptid-- actually, I've been around since Rileytown (thanks for the compliment, by the way), but you're not far off the mark. I've actually been following this blog a lot longer; Sean & Christian's dry humor has been the only way I've gotten through babysitting weekends. It's cool that you somehow remember me, though.

Will-- Agree. Personally, I think that Cory is the main benefactor as to why the family doesn't go skiing (nature and the Pluto episode say all), but Topanga has her own underlying reasons. Cory and Riley are both klutzes. It's funny how they used to overly emphasize that in Riley's personality, & now they barely bring it up, but she could have outgrown it, & the writers are who the writers are.

    8. AirbendingBookworm123- "I agree that the girls should also have an adventure on their own, as well, although this is a lot harder since Riley's interest bag is really shallow."

Riley's interests beyond the Knicks might be unknown, but I could see Isadora convincing them to go the science museum, where there's an exhibit on patterns in nature that might appeal to Maya. Maya might suggest going to an art museum, and Isadora knows the biographies of the artists, or what was happening when the artist was working, which Maya finds interesting.

I could easily picture an argument over the triangle at Topanga's Bakery, while Isadora and Farkle have an argument over something else at a different part of the establishment. Riley or Maya says they can't deal with this and leave, inviting Isadora to go with them.

Regarding Auggie, 6 years, especially at that age, is a huge age difference. Beyond control of the TV, there isn't much to argue over. You're not going to get many sibling moments, because the two are at totally different places in life.

"the girls could help out bake at Topanga's and it turns out to be an ultimate disaster."
I love the idea of baking disaster at home, because it makes more sense. They're too young to work at the bakery, and I'm sure there are rules about working in a commercial kitchen. Having it at home could be a good way to have Auggie and Riley together. They want to make a special dinner or desert for their parents, and it goes horribly wrong.

      Agh stupid Blogger. Okay.

Kit-- While it is possible that Riley and Auggie won't be able to interact and having sibling moments due to the age differences, slight interactions such as may them fighting over the television in the house or even him asking Riley to not be loud in her bedroom having a bay window moment with her friends while he's trying to sleep early would be nice. The two trying to get along and make their parents dinner would e genius, and can also be solely a family-dynamic'ed episode. As stated before, Auggie subplots would be better in small doses, while integrating him throughout parts of the episodes besides being babysat by Topanga. The good news is that the two are apparently getting their own sibling-centric episode, if that part of the rumor for "Girl Meets Bear" is true.

You may be right about there being rules for working in a commercial factory. Some states (I'm not sure if all) allow for fourteen-year-olds to work certain jobs, but getting a job at the age of sixteen is more what people are used to, and more of what will appeal to the TV-universe.

It would be fun to see the Code Six or even the Core Four in groups or even some of them by themselves (Maybe Riley-Zay-Smackle and Farkle-Maya-Lucas would be good group combos), applying for a job and ultimately dealing with a major mishap, but they kind of accomplished that all ready in S1. Production for Season Three is mostly done; if GMW does get renewed for Season Four, I wouldn't mind them exploring this area. There's a lot more to the world than just the school area and home, although those are some of the main places high-school lives are rooted in. They've got an underused subway to travel in...

  12. I loved the intro to this. It was a nice callback to the scene in "Corey's Alternate Friends" where he and Shawn are giving a presentation with the the pointers and banging them on the map with no regard to where they were pointing. Honestly, that was all I liked about the episode.

The rest was BMW rehash and Disney Channel fluff.

Also, spot on with the competent adult remark. There is nothing grounding this show to reality. The (very few) greatest episodes of this show had that element and I'm surprised the writers haven't picked up on it. Girl Meets the Forgotten was a perfect example. That lunch lady was a perfect Feeny like character and Topanga was acting like a mom.

We need adults acting like adults and no more fantasy sequences.

    3. I don't think that it's as if they'll fear a loss in viewership. I think it's more that the image Disney and Nickelodeon and other kid channels want to show is a Kids Rule! mentality.

It goes beyond not having respectable adults--it often has the kids function completely self-sufficently.

And in any case, though the adults haven't been handled well on GMW, it's still better than a fair chunk of Disney Channel and all of Nickelodeon.

  13. I took Lucas' whole 'that's not what i like about you' to mean, he really likes a different part of her character, but is kinda iffy on the whole rule breaking part. To be honest, all throughout the show, i was so certain we'd have a Lucas/Riley resolution until that line. He was too earnest. I'd have preferred that ski lodge boy a sophomore from the trip...someone she can take back home with her. And i suspect i'm in the minority here, but welcome back Uncle Boing! I'm rooting for you.

  18. Uriah Shelton looking young for age is a good thing, except for the romantic plot they have him in. Because people are used to seeing older actors playing teenagers, people forget what real teenagers look like. Also, some people just look young. I was offered kids' menus into my 20s. My older brother was almost 30 before he stopped getting carded.

    1. Right, my issue with it is that they draw attention to how Josh is too old for Maya, and it's weird because Lucas isn't treated as age inappropriate when he looks older than Josh. If it weren't for that, I'd have no issue with how Josh looks.

      Delete
    2. A friend of mine went to a film festival, and the ticket lady asked if she were over twelve or under twelve.

My friend was nineteen at the time.

So, I definitely agree with Kit that some people just look young.

It'd be nice to see this written into the show--I would love to see a scene where somebody mistakes Josh for Cory's son.

It's actually a little strange that Friar's age isn't be called up. He doesn't just look a lot older than his friends--though it's not as much now that Farkle is a shade taller than him (though that may be the haricut)--having been held back a year, Friar actually is at least a year older than Riley, and the difference is probably closer to two years.

      Delete
  19. The episode felt like a waste. They were trying to do a two part episode, with only enough material for a single half hour episode. I think Maya's too smart and strong to be a Bond girl. I like the idea of a couple of super-spies, and that she'd rather argue with Lucas than save the day. I would have kept Maya's fantasy mostly the way it was, just cut the musical number and give him a last name that wasn't Bond.

The idea of Riley's fantasy as a soapy melodrama was so her. It took me a day to realize that was exactly who she is and what she'd be into.

Overall, I thought the dream/fantasy sequences were a waste and a way to fill time that could have been used on other things. Instead of the fantasy scenes, I would have liked to actually see what happened on the hike, and show Riley and Laurence (which is what I've decided to call male-Lauren) talking and getting to know each other.

  20. Everything went downhill fast in this episode, and it started just seconds after the pointer broke in the classroom. You know what I don't like? I don't like being lied to. In the Q&A, the writers made it seem like Josh's first line back would be "Hi kiddies. I was wrong". Well, as it turns out, "I was wrong" was Maya's reaction to seeing Josh again. Which her reaction brings us right back to where we were before Uriah's accident. I think we aren't done with Maya/Josh by a long shot, so let's get prepared for that. Besides, if the writers can't give us a tiny piece of dialogue like that and it not end up being some BS half truth, then Jacobs is just a hack at this point.

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but is it really imitation when you are imitating your own stuff? No, its lazy. When can this show stand on it's own? We know it can, we've seen it do it. But this show feels like an old wrestler, who's set in his ways. He doesn't care what happens in the ring, just so long as he gets his stuff in. I knew we'd have some of that in this episode, but it feels like it was just moving from one old BMW gimmick to the next. It's tiring.

KILL THE TRIANGLE!! Seriously, I'm done. If Lucas wasn't a main character, he'd be a 2 episode plot device on why being a fuckboy isn't ok, and they'd have moved on. He brings nothing at this point, and his inability to find a backbone and stand up and scream that he's made his choice already is infuriating. Farkle hasn't been great, but I do find Isadora funny. Zay and Riley both had funny lines that I genuinely laughed at, but besides that, this was a shit show.

Oh, and Christian, we both know that will be Lauren's son. Are you prepared to just be disgusted with that as I am?

Episode Grade: D. Just irredeemable filler and nonsense. The fantasy sequences, the homages...all of it. Just bad filler.

Episode MVP: Ben Savage. Like I said, he was the best part of this episode for the most part. It all went bad after the pointer broke.

    1. On the note of Uriah's accident, had it not happened, where do you think we'd be now, pwfan?

He was supposed to be in "New Year," and "Legacy." And if memory serves, "Graduation/Legacy" was supposed to be a two-parter...though "Bay Window" my have been a hastily re-written "Graduation Part 1."

It's quite possible this entire damned Triangle would have ended at the end of Season 2 had Uriah not gotten hurt.

      Delete
    2. Only issue with that is, the only way it would have ended early is if they were going down the Josh/Maya storyline.

      Delete
    3. I think they wanted to go down the Josh/Maya path, you guys. It was obvious on the show, and the Q&A hammered that point home. They wanted to play with that idea, and then the accident happened. I really think it's plain as day that's what they wanted to do.

      Delete
    4. Do they want to go down it, or do they want to go down it and then show that an age difference, at this point in their lives, is bad?

It raises a few questions about what could have been--I doubt Maya would have been the least bit intimidated by the Seniors if she had "a college boyfriend." And this Triangle wouldn't have dragged on for a third of the show.

Got to say though, I think I actually respect them for not recasting Josh Matthews.

      Delete
    5. All I can really guess is that they wanted to go down that path long enough for it to be interesting. They could have played in that sandbox a little bit, and even if it ended with the predictable "age difference" explanation, it still would have been the most non-Disney storyline they could have ever run. And this show needs interesting desperately.

      Delete
    6. Regarding Josh/Maya, what I got from this episode is that they really would like to go down that path, understand that the three-year age difference is an impassible barrier, and are working on that problem.

So maybe he isn’t three years older. Maybe he’s only two years older…or one year older…or the same age. And always has been. They made Shawn 32 all of a sudden. Why can’t Josh suddenly be 16?

      Delete
    7. Which of course, resets his age to what he was originally, given they aged him up.

But of course, they then need to address how he's going to college, which has actually been stated; and what the big deal about him and college was if he's actually younger than stated.

Also, why, oh why, have none of the adults said anything about the age difference?

      Delete
    8. Will, I think if they actually did that, they would dismiss the elephant-sized discontinuity with a self-aware joke or two. They could also Dallas it, Maya waking from a dream in which Josh was too old for her.

      Delete
    9. Will van Roekel-The adults don't need to say anything. Josh has made it clear that he is too old for her at this stage in his life. He knows it's wrong to date someone in high-school, so he's not going to do that.

We're nowhere near that. But I'm betting that, with Jacobs mentioning that "wrong decisions" about to be made, whatever happens in "Ski Lodge 2" is not something that is going to still be around by season's end.

  24. Lots of filler in this episode. However, one issue that stuck out to me was Friar getting irritated with Maya "breaking rules." Well it was established that Farkle almost fell off a hill side and Maya "rescued" him. So it seems rather odd that Lucas would be taking a stand against Maya over saving Farkle. If anything, it makes him look like a horrible friend to Farkle.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm the last person who will defend Friar, and agree that he can be a really fair-weathered friend, but we don't know what actually happened.

The drop may have been all of four feet, and Farkle was exaggerating because he was confused and disoriented.

      Delete
  25. Oh, I almost forgot. In regards to Isadora's behavior in this episode, we are coming right off "True Maya," where Farkle kissed Maya's nose.

So flirting with Friar, and Josh, may just be her way of getting even.

  27. I love Farkle and want him to be with Riley. His issue this season is being paired with Farkle light, aka Smackle, who I enjoyed in this episode more than usual. She's so boy crazy that I'd like to see it lead to her breaking up with Farkle, so he could be with Riley.

I did not relaize until I saw the pictures how much the sets did resemble one another. maybe it's because all we really saw was the stupid bay window.

    1. I'm honestly curious, what in particular do you love about Farkle?

      Delete
    2. For me, the weird thing with Farkle is that he keeps having different issues. Like, I wasn't into him during Season 1 because of the creepy stalker-y vibe and he was way too over-the top. None of that is true about him anymore (hell, he's so understated as to be downright boring now), but still he doesn't work.

      Delete
    3. Speaking as someone who is fond of Farkle, and has been for quite a while, may I chime in?

I certainly agree that Farkle's behavior was unacceptable in the first season. Personally, I took it as the result of long-quarreling parents and was surprised to see that wasn't addressed.

That could explain the "stalker" vibe, and the over-the-top behavior (a cry for attention).

His growth in Season 2 was sharper than any of the group's, so I enjoyed watching that. I like it when there's visible growth of a character. It's a noticeable passage of time and it can help tell you where you are in the story, even in a filler episode.

Besides, Farkle's taller than Frair now, and I think that's funny.

Is Farkle boring? I wouldn't go so far as to say that, but I do think he's gotten the short end of the stick.

Christian says he doesn't work, but I find that only tends to be true when we're overly stuck in this Triangle nonsense. The first few episodes this season, Farkle was fine.

And I'll say this for Farkle--on the rare occasions he and Riley argue, he at least has the decency to confront her about /why/ he's angry with her.

      Delete
    4. Farkle is Topanga 2.0. He's past his totally strange stage, now he's just slightly different.

      Delete
    5. Cosmo, exactly. Farkle definitely developed into Topanga 2.0 which is why he SHOULD have ended up with Riley. Damn it would've been great to see Riley suddenly realize she shouldn't just go for the pretty boy when Farkle suddenly confronts her about something and makes her step out of her comfort zone (not exactly paints her face with lipstick or kisses her when she's having a bad hair day, but something like that could've worked). But this season they just brushed all Farkle's development to the side and gave him a farkle-light smackle relationship. Big wrong turn, Farkle could have saved this show from its triangle nonsense and really struck a parallel chord with BMW by having previously weird farkle turn out to be the boy Riley falls in love with. I really thought they were setting that up last season. Quite a disappointment. gah why do i watch this damn show... i think the only reason is so i can read this blog cause it's funny to see other people stuck in this same damn quicksand of a show.

      Delete
    6. But in my view, that's why Riley and Farkle -shouldn't- end up together. -Not- have the parallels ending up together this time around. And certainly not have the 'first love be the true love'. Cory/Topanga is somewhat unrealistic as it is; but at least if it's only them that does that, you can argue that "but occasionally, the high-school romance works".

      Delete
    7. I agree with Will.

I do /not/ want Riley and Farkle together. I honestly prefer them as devoted, physically affectionate, PLATONIC friends.

We need these characters to grow, and as fond as I am of them, I do not want these two together.

That being said, if Cory thinks that his daughter has fallen in love with Minkus Jr., and proceeds to throw a tremendous tantrum, I'd love to see that.

      Delete
    8. New ANON here,

While I agree that Farkle and Riley do parallel Cory and Topanga, it wouldn't be a first love story, because Riley liked Lucas first and Farkle has been in a long term relationship with smackle. I think if they went with Riley and Farkle it would be almost rectifying the ridiculous retcon they pulled about Cory and Topanga being in love since they were 2. Riley and Farkle could be this generation's version, but without the contrived background story.

Oh and to answer Sean, I like Farkle because he's adorable and quirky compared the lucas, who is basically a little girls fanfiction character. It goes against everything Boy Meets world stood for for Riley to end up with someone like Lucas. The appeal of Boy Meets World is that they were normal, imperfect kids who we could all relate to. Mr Perfect Lucas does not fit in BMW universe.

      Delete
    9. I want Farkle and Riley as an endgame, but I mean series finale endgame. I want them to date many, many people, and ultimately realize they are right for each other.

      Delete
    10. ... But would Cory throwing a tantrum about Minkus Jr. be any better than him throwing a tantrum about Lucas?

I mean, if it's him complaining to Shawn about it; or even ranting about it to Topanga, fine. But I don't want him throwing Farkle out the door.

    11. This comment has been removed by the author.

    12. While I wouldn't want Cory to throw Farkle out the door, or chase him down the fire escape, the intention was that Cory would throw a tantrum over nothing. And by that I mean something he ought not to be concerned about, rather than Friar, who in the first season, was the physical manifestation of Boring, and strangely got a lot more of Cory's outrage.

A Cory Matthews over-reaction is a Cory Matthews over-reaction. And those are almost always fun.

So, Cory ranting to Shawn, ranting to Topanga, tattling on them to Feeny, proceeding to get into a middle-school-level fight with Stuart and losing, anything really. The point is that Cory is making a fuss over nothing.

I agree that it may be because of shipping people were attracted to watching this week's episode, but many of the GMW Instagram community has been imploring to cut the chord on the triangle and move on, while another fraction just wants their ships to go hard (while some just overreact and say they're done with the show because "I shattered my phone because Lucaya isn't endgame"). Not sure if this will go up or down for part two, since the second part took up YouTube by storm and spoilers flog the Tumblr server.

All of you older people are lucky; you didn't have the option to spend a large portion of your first eighteen years enduring as much social media crap from those opposing your ship. You have healthy lives to not worry about whatever these combined names are.

    3. Don't tell me I'm an older person!

To be honest, I don't recall really being into ships when I was younger. I got into them a little bit when I was older, but, with notable exceptions, I would be shipping the canon couples. Most of the shows/movies I watched it was quite clear who the endgame couples would be. And romance was never the sole-purpose of a show regardless, so I wasn't usually too fussed on who would end up with who. There were one or two exceptions, but never to the point of hating anyone who disagreed.

    9. Liv and Maddie is over? As in, done? I thought that finale meant they were moving to L.A.. There's nothing left on the channel now. You're right, GMW is a masterpiece compared to the nonsense on now.

    10. I mean there is no more coming after the abbreviated season 4, which premieres in September. They are doing the show in LA after the move from Stevens Point.

Truthfully it blows because other than Willow, all the recurring characters (except maybe Josh, Johnny Nimbus and Gemma) will be gone and we are supposed to care about new characters, but with only 1 season (shortened to boot) it will be hard to actually get into them.

  33. Honestly, I hope it does get cancelled on Disney and then moved to another channel. Only problem is that I don't know if the actor's are capable of real acting and not "Disney acting. " See Stranger Things on Netflix for what real acting is.

    1. I don't know how things work in America, but I'm not sure it's that simple to just move to another station. I'd prefer it stays on Disney, but with the writers allowed a bit more leeway as to writing their stories.

What I don't want is it to be moved to another station, which then encourages a divorce storyline, or more 'adult' storylines. It is what it is.

    2. I'm not sure how easy it is either, but Boy Meets World did it, and it was better for it. The acting was better and more passionate, it wasn't as cutesy. It felt like a real family tv show, not one that really only kids can fully enjoy.

    3. Really? My research says it was on ABC for it's entire run; and repeats have been aired on various networks.

    4. BMW was never on any network but ABC. It has been airing in syndication for the last 15 years all over the place.

Also GMW would have to change its writing style pretty dramatically to fit in on any other network. Even ABC or Freeform have nothing close to this "childish" airing in first run or syndication.

  34. The schedule for August according to Disney ABC press:

August 12: Girl Meets I Do - Maya has some concerns about Shawn and Katy’s upcoming wedding.

August 19: Girl Meets Sassy Haltertop - Riley has trouble with her debate assignment when she must argue if people are naturally good or evil.

August 26: Girl Meets Bear - Riley wakes to find her childhood teddy bear, Barry the Bear, missing and enlists the help of her family and friends to find him.

Except for I Do, none of that sounds particularly exciting to me. And didn't Topanga take the bear to put away with Riley's other childhood memories in "Bay Window" when she was redecorating and throwing stuff out?

    1. Topanga took the bear to "put away" in case Riley needed it.

Sassy Haltertop actually sounds potentially pretty good. Cautiously crossing my fingers. Not digging the name though.

    2. Yeah, Topanga just put Barry in a little "treasures box" along with Friar's shoe. Just in case Riley wanted to see them again.

It wouldn't surprise me if Topanga gave Friar back his shoe, but I'd suspect she'd want to keep Barry.

Also, since when is it "Barry"? Why is it "Barry"? Was it always "Barry"? I thought it was "Beary."

It's actually a shame that scene in "Bay Window" didn't amount to much. Instead of those useless flashbacks, Topanga and Riley making a memory box, while cheesier than the burger I ate for supper half an hour ago, would have been sweet.

"Sassy Haltertop" sounds pretty good, for a filler episode, all things considered. Riley has long behaved as if she agreed with Rousseau, that all men are naturally good. And apparently she's on the debate team now.

"I Do" has Shawn. Shawn is awesome. I am happy.

And since when has this show had decent episode names?

    3. Some of the episode names wouldn't be too bad, if they didn't all have the 'Girl Meets' beginning. I've never been fond of the 'let's have a clear naming pattern' method of naming episodes. I prefer "let's make a reference to pop culture". Even School of Rock's method of calling each episode by a famous song is better.

    4. When did that pattern start anyway? Was it with Friends? That had the naming pattern of "The One With..." which I actually think is clever, because that's actually how most people remember an episode.

    5. They have released some promotional photos for "Sassy Haltertop" and "Bear" - http://www.disneyabcpress.com/disneychannel/shows/girl-meets-world/photos/

Nothing for "I Do" though so far.

    6. Seinfeld did it before friends. I don't know if I've watched any sitcoms older than Seinfeld.

    7. I've watched Sitcoms older than Seinfeld; but I didn't really pay attention to naming patterns then. But either way, with Friends I didn't really mind it; because yeah, it is how people remember an episode. But I think it was something that worked then; but it usually makes for not good episode names.

    8. Oh God in Heaven, not Little Riley and Little Maya again. I wouldn't mind it so much--but it clearly isn't a flashback!

Also, I like Cory's "Tacos" sweatshirt.

      Taco! *Points to mouth*

  36. This episode was a giant time waster. There was no need to make it a 2 parter when they didn't even bother to advertise it as such (like Girl Meets Texas was a huge event) and when they didn't have enough ideas for 2 parts

What bothered me most though, was what amounted to Jacobs and crew covering their butts i.e. Lucas' assertion that all 3 should make the decision. That is not true in the least. It's all about Lucas and what he wants since he does not *have* to date the one left over. Even if Maya or Riley were to bow out if he wasn't going to choose the one that didn't he does not have to settle for the other. I hate how they tacked that on as if it justifies why Lucas has not been allowed to say anything. As if it wasn't their need to drag this out as long as possible that kept him from speaking.

(I'm new to this blog. But,it amuses me that there are so many people as weirdly devoted to this show as I am.)
